I have had problems with download speed of usenet headers and posts which seems better since the NBN mob fiddled that night but may not have anything to do with it. Do not remember saying anything about 5 down speeds.

His problem is that he's so stupid that he can't even manage to work out how to enter the username and password in the router that allows you to do that.

The MR supplied modem is a Technicolor 789VAC v2 if the OP is using the latest one. http://www.technicolor.com/en/solutions-services/connected-home/broadband-devices/telco-gateways/tg789vac-v2 > >> and have their own custom firmware installed on it , so it is best to >> get your own hardware if possible , > > Pointless when the supplied router works fine. > >> Skymesh , ABB allow 3rd party hardware of a NBN connection. > > So does TPG and MR. Yes , the TPG umbrella can allow 3rd party hardware on a NBN connection , provided you don't need TPG's voip service. If you need a voip service on TPG or a Internode / iiNet HFC connection then you are stuck with the TPG supplied modem either the Huawei HG659 or the newer TP-Link VR1600v as the voip service connects to TPG's Netphone voip/sip server and it uses encrypted credentials to access the server. However the point I am making is that a ISP supplied modem is usually crap and has custom firmware on it and even if you move to another ISP , the modem still updates the firmware from the other ISP which can cause issues. Even the latest TPG modem the TP-Link VR1600v is somewhat crappy , it is based on the VR600v modem with AC1600 wifi , the hardware on it is OK , but it has internal antennas which can give crappy wifi . http://www.tp-link.com.au/products/details/Archer-VR1600v.html Sandgroper -------------------------------------------- Save planet Earth ! The modem that TPG supplied me certainly isn't the best but it is not in the least locked down. The main problem in replacing it is finding a good VDSL modem with VOIP support, although that can be added externally.

These days , the TPG voip modems that are used for TPG voip service , the Huawei HG659 and the newer one that has just been released , the TP-Link VR1600v. The username and password used to get access to the voip sip/voip server is encrypted on the modem and there have been plenty of people who have tried using workarounds to get the voip service working on 3rd party hardware and can't , especially on a HFC connection with TPG , Internode and iiNet. If you are on a FTTN , FTTP , FTTB connection with Internode or iiNet , it is fine as you can get access to the voip settings , however if you get a HFC connection with Internode or iiNet and you need a voip service , then you will be connecting to the TPG Netphone that uses encrypted username and passwords and you will be forced to use the crappy Huawei HG659 or the newer TP-Link VR1600v. Another thing to remember is that any ISP supplied modem automatically updates the firmware on it , so even if you change ISP and use the same modem , the modem updates the firmware from the old ISP. Another thing to remember is that most ISP supplied modems are configured for remote access which means that there is always a open port for access , which is a security risk. Most ISP supplied modems are really only good for bridging to a router as they are crap modem with crap wifi. The current trend now for all the cheap sods out there is when they move to the NBN with a FTTN/FTTB connection or change to another ISP they get the older Telstra TG-789VAC off eBay or Gumtree for less than $50 and bridge it to a router. -- Sandgroper -------------------------------------------- Save planet Earth ! Block the open port , then you block the firmware updates It is true , the ISP supplied modem does update the firmware from the original ISP , you are too stupid to realise that. >> Another thing to remember is that most ISP supplied modems are >> configured for remote access which means that there is always a open >> port for access , which is a security risk. > > Even a terminal fuckwit such as yourself can turn that off. > >> Most ISP supplied modems are really only good for bridging to a router >> as they are crap modem with crap wifi. > > The one MR supplies isnt. Most of the ISP supplied modems use N300 wifi and are the cheap crappy modems , it is only just recently that some ISP are introducing AC1600 wifi modems. Skymesh use a D-Link Talkbox 2800 , while the hardware specs are good and using the new Triductor chipset , the firmware on it is a bit crappy and people have had issues with them. The iiNet / Internode TG-789 has good hardware specs , but the wifi on it is patchy at times as it has internal antennas . TPG use the crappy POS the Huawei HG659 modem that is not even worth switching on , let alone paying for the frigging thing. The newer TP-Link VR1600v is actually a VR600v , but it has internal antennas on it and while some people say the wifi is good , it is yet to be determined by general usage if the wifi is OK. So basically most ISP supplied modems are mostly a bit crappy , the only good thing about them is that they are sold to the customer at a reduce rate. > >> The current trend now for all the cheap sods out there is when they >> move to the NBN with a FTTN/FTTB connection or change to another ISP >> they get the older Telstra TG-789VAC off eBay or Gumtree for less >> than $50 and bridge it to a router. > > Fuck all do that Just telling people of what is the current trend with the NBN , which a old dinosaur like you may not know about or understand. . -- Sandgroper -------------------------------------------- Save planet Earth ! Nope, its due to the pathetic wifi that you get with the router TPG supplys. It cant even come close to delivering the 100/40 the service supplys. > The MR modem have internal antennas , so you are always going to get > crappy wifi , Even more pig ignorant than you usually manage.
