Could be an issue with your carrier given you've tried different PCs and
operating systems.  

I only have ADSL2 @ around 8Mbps down.  Though the only really busy
group I'm subscribed to might have 100-150 headers to retrieve on any
given day, but slrn usually downloads them in a couple of seconds.

The only thing I can suggest is that your ISP is throttling usenet
traffic to discourage mass binary downloaders - Astraweb lets you
establish up to 20 concurrent connections which will usually let you max
out your connection for binary downloads.

Nope, I use the same RSP and modem as he does and we are both on fttn.

He might well be on a POI where MyRepublic has done its own thing in
the POI instead of using Optus Wholesale tho and they have just made
the Gong their first Gigatown, gigabit FTTP for those on FTTP there. That
may have happened quite recently as the gigabit has only gone live a
few weeks ago.

Sounds a tad unlikely compared with all that video streaming.

I've got my newsreader set to only download the latest 500 headers
because Aioe is a bit slow all the time (not that I've tried to
compare it). It might be worth checking if yours can do that too,
for a short-term solution at least.

Do you know anyone else off the gong POI with MR that you can
try with your laptop at ?  Its possible that MR's Gigatown venture
has produced some quirk with nntp. Have fun getting that fixed
if they have the same problem tho.

Not sure where the wollondilly area is connected, the son lives in 
woolongong, the bloke down the road has my republic but I would never be 
in his house at the problem times.

Check if he is on the same POI as you.

And strictly speaking you need someone who is with
MR on a different POI to try with your laptop too.

Yeah, forgot about the time of day, could be a problem.

That time of day thing makes it unlikely it's a Gigatown unique
probem given that congestion shouldn't be a problem on that POI
because they obviously don't want to look bad congestion wise.

Could still be some unintended quirk tho, even back in the NBN
system given that it's the only gigabit service in the country yet.

Be interesting to diagnose, but not that easy to do.

Trouble is that he gets it with two different ones.
They could be both using the same code tho.

I'd certainly try NIN if I was him, doesn't cost much to try.

Mine was $50.00 for ever or near as damnit.
Used 6.5 GB aprox in the last few years, have 993.5 GB aprox left
so unless they go belly up I am set for life.And has binaries.

Just try NIN and if you still see the problem with that, must be a local
problem given that the pretzel and I don't see that stall problem with it.

If you don't see the stall problem with it, keep using it, its much
more reliable than the alternatives and costs peanuts per year.

Only thing it doesn't do is binarys.
