#60140 — Internet connection question

Fromfelix <felix@real_felix.invalid>
Date2017-06-03 15:59 +1000
SubjectInternet connection question
Message-ID<epf1jsFii4rU1@mid.individual.net>
question for Computer nerd Kev (and others)..

my 'smart tv' is apparently not so smart as it can't find my internet
via ethernet. so I was connecting it via wifi, but then streaming movies
kept pausing, and it was difficult to get them to play in HD. here's a
screenshot of the tv when it's trying to connect via ethernet
http://austek.net/pics/tv_connect.jpg

I recall that there was some discussion about the TPG modem having
difficulty allocating IP addresses, and that there is some way to 'set'
the IP address to overcome this problem. ( I don't know a lot about
networking as it doesn't interest me) so the question is how do I get
the tv to establish a reliable ethernet connection? I am on the TPG
unlimited 25 mbps plan. many thanks IA

With me streaming is done by a "box" that receives Internet via WiFi.
There is a place for a Ethernet connection
This in turn plugs into a HDMI from box to TV HDMI

I receive via Internet from Japan 50 channels (no English) works well
The price is $160 a year but had to buy "Android TV Box" $80 extra
with APP installed

I have the aps on the tv itself. I can also stream via a Fetch box, but
I prefer to use the tv aps

I guess that means you speak Japanese then

Because you silly old snivelling coward and serial liar, your TV is
using an "automatic" Ip address when it should be using DHCP.

Errrmmmm, DHCP *is* automatic.

Yes it is but - Many TV, set top box makers, Blu-ray makers etc use the
term "automatic" to mean a pre-assigned address in the unit in question
that exists soley so that an installer with skills can connect to the
device and then fine tune its network settings to connect to the local
modem/router.

So you assume his TV is among those??? Bad assumption.

> term "automatic" to mean a pre-assigned address in the unit in question

A pre-assigned address is not *automatic*. A pre-assigned address may
well be outside the default range used by the router so it can hardly be
*automatic* if it requires a tech to *reset* the pre-assigned range.

> that exists soley so that an installer with skills can connect to the

Felix said the *automatic setting* was the default. That means that it
is the setting for *novice* users. These would be users who depend on
the plug and play ability of the set top box to connect to the network
with the minimum of fuss and bother.
Most home internet connections are DHCP by default so it would make
sense for the TV to use DHCP by default.

Proof?

You want proof maggot?

you mean ,like the proof you never provide when called on your all too
frequent lies?

Go google for it - you are good at that (at least).

You might need to *go Google for it* since you got it all wrong in the
first place. I already know how DHCP and static IP addresses operate.

Loser.

Your problem is that the steaming turd of a modem that TPG normally
supplies is completely fucked wifi wise. That’s why the TV keeps pausing
because it can't deliver what the TV needs to stream continuously.

Which modem is it ?

yes, you have mentioned that before.

Netcom N300 - NF12

what would you recommend as a replacement, without spending an arm and a
leg? I also have a myrepublic modem, and a belong modem. could either of
those be reconfigured to replace the TPG one?

Yeah, that's one of the fucked ones.

That one does wifi very well indeed. Only real
downside with it is the lack of a full manual.

Yep, the MyRepublic one would be fine, just put your username
and password into that and it will work fine on TPG.

yes. I signed up and got a welcome email saying I would be informed of
the progress. heard nothing for two weeks, then the modem came in the
mail. waited another 2 weeks and still had heard nothing. so I rang the
service line but hung up after being on hold for over half an hour.
tried again a few days later, same thing. so I sent email asking for
someone to ring me. got no reply until about two weeks later when an
email came telling me to ring their service line to check the progress,
so I decided that a company this incompetent can't be any good, so I
never did any more about it. also Rod has said here that their speed can
drop to as low as 5mbps, so that confirms it.

I get this fairly consistently with this test, over 40 every time I have
tested using this test during the last 6 times.
