I am trying to download linux mint iso through optus server but is
downloading at about 15 KB/sec,why is this so when my broadband speed is
30 Mbps or so on my xp computer it says 1day 6hrs expected
At least on my laptop running linux it is downloading at 60 odd KB/sec,
Why is it so.
Would it have been the same when my broadband was running at 2.3 Mbps
The xp download just failed because the source code could not be read.

Those speeds avtually look more like dialup than broadband.

Ethernet speed depends on the card: it might be 10, 100 or 1000 Mb/s,
which with overhead, should give you about 1, 10 or 100 Mbytes/s of
throughput in good conditions.

But one of the conditions is the OS, And Windows is a crock, whatever
your version. Sometimes it runs a card well, somtimes it doesn't.
If you know what to look at and for, you might try investigating
the configuration of your XP machine, or if you know someone accessible
who can help, give them a call.

Whatever happens, persevere woth your d/l of mint then install it
and start to enjoy a *real* OS (and some *real* broadband speeds).

Good luck.

Ned

I already have mint on one laptop and it is downloading faster at the
moment, in the 300 KB/sec range at the moment but was only going at
60KB/sec a while ago

I am only downloading the latest mint to make a bootable usb to try in
the xp box as I am having troubles with usenet going slow, hanging
up,timing out etc. a lot lately which could be any combination of
seamonkey, XP, astraweb or myrepublic

Just booted mint on XP box and fired up astraweb usenet the speed is
phenomenal, instantaneous, the windows system definitely needs
attention, food for thought.

You are running an unsupported OS. One that has been superceded quite
a few times and you wonder at how it works?

Don't be stupider than you have to be. 'Doze is a crock, but its

Exactly. As long as the hardware continues to run, so will the
software.

It will still be a steaming heap of insecurity just waiting to be part
of a botnet (maybe it is already which would explain your performance
problems)

Would that be why I am having similar problems with win 7 and mint ?
I was beginning to think astraweb but eternal is also playing up, Maybe
the modem or my republic has a set against me or asio is interfering :).
Normal web browsing is ok from all of my machines but usenet is not
working properly on any (tried rebooting modem)

Disconnect all tour machines but one linux boc from the internet.
Check your Usenet client (use a text only client if mint has one).
If your performance isn't good try pinging astraweb. If it is
try a news client you like, then progress eith reconnections from
there.
