Another bloke I know bought a new Discovery 4 and went on a family trip with a few others. He bought it specifically for it's off-road reputation but it broke down on the Gibb River Road, the first track they attempted. He wasn't real happy.

FWIW, I didn't mind the early F Head variants but I can only recall working on a few of those back in my early apprenticeship days. Mostly it was Series II and IIa. The engines in those were tough, the drivelines somewhat less so. Lost count of how many axles I have replaced in them, Ditto for clutches and Uni Joints. Even seen them rust out or crack the chassis. Admittedly, they were working in a very harsh environment in a tin mine. By the time the Series III came onto the scene the Toyota Land Cruiser had well and truly begun to replace the venerable old Land Rover. The Land Cruiser was almost ubiquitous in the mines in WA by the mid 70s. No surprise in that decision if rust was an issue. I used to lave my old ute. Mind you the Brits love getting their hands on LR Series from Aus because we have less rust issues than they do.

Vehicles are operating in an ore slurry that acts like grining paste on all mechanical components. For instance, brake linings last 4 weeks. Drums do a tad better and see two sets of linings. Universal joints clag out in a couple of months. Need to frequently replace seals on the ball swivel hubs at very regular intervals. If operating in or around the Mill, the acid eats away at everything made of metal, including the alloy body. The shift bosses used the Land Rovers to get about underground. Apart from the bucket loaders and the dump trucks, there were many other specialised vehicles underground ranging up to 50 tonne gross or more. During one stint, I spent spring, summer and autumn there and recall only one day where it didn't rain. I did two stints there but the later stint in 79 was as a contractor working for a mate who ran a labour hire company. Tin mining is a very polluting industry. Look up the effects on the net. It's the acid used in the reduction of the ore. The mine I worked at mainly mined copper and tin (focus on tin) but silver, lead, zinc and gold were present in the orebody though not in economically extractable quantities. The remnants of the mine are here; http://tinyurl.com/gs75bb9 In the time I was there, the mine was down to 2,000 feet. At 4,000 feet it collapsed and left the crater you see in the link. The orebody was removed to the 4,000 foot level and the top of the mountain collapsed in on the hollow core, took out all the pumps and flooded the mine. It was a mine very similar to the Beaconsfield Mine in Tassie but, because the collapse happened during the night when no night shift was operating, no lives were lost and it didn't even make the media. If you're ever in that area, drop in to the Waratah pub to see and meet an eclectic and interesting bunch of locals. Old Landcruisers were immune to rust, my 40series had quite a lot when I first bought and it took a lot of work to get rid of it. LR bodies are aluminum so no rust in the bodies and the chassis is most likely covered in oil which improves it rust resistance:-) Reminds me of an old joke: When do you know when your LR need its oil topped up? Huh? One sentence you say Land Cruisers were immune to rust yet in the next you say yours had quite a lot of it. A 40 series is an *old* Land Cruiser. Of course the bodies on Land Rovers don't rust. Rust is *Ferric Oxide* and only applies to iron.
