The error messages are what they are. What you have difficulty with is in interpreting the accompanying text. What that clearly shows is the text *general failure* that you perceive as an error message is in actuality merely advisory information for the programmer. It is in the programmers manual after all is said and done. Had it been in the User Guide, and in a column headed with *console error message*, then you might have been in the race. The OS, on the other hand, translates the numeric codes and displays the error messages in human readable text form at the console level. Those text forms are discussed at length in the appendix of said manual.
