SubjectUsage utility for Windows?

I'm in need of a good data usage utility to run on Win 7. Is anyone
familiar with the current offerings and can recommend one? I haven't
used such a util in at least a decade but now obviously need to
monitor my real usage vs. what the NBN says I'm using. There's
something seriously rotten with the NBN's usage meter...

What kind of router are you using? It might have something "built in".

I have a couple of old Netgear routers, they have nothing like that
built in. I just came across Networx, which looks promising and will
give it a try today. Tnx.

I've been using SoftPerfect's NetWorx [1] for quite some time and I've
been very pleased with it.

Well... snap. I looked at a few possibilities and liked the look of
Networx, so I will install it later and give it a try. It must be good
if you're recommending it, many thanks for the help.

Hmm, task bar integration is a failure. Says it's there... only it
isn't (Win 7). I can access it from the start menu though.

Hmmm!? Strange! Never had that problem on XP or Vista. On 8[.1] (and I
assume on 10), you of course have to tell the 'Notification Area Icons'
Control Panel applet to 'Show icon and notifications'. 7 does not have
that (a little white up-triangle icon on the Taskbar), does it? (I never
had 7.)

Yes Win 7 has the little triangle. No sign of anything there either.

>(I never had 7.)

Not sure what happened, but after some mucking about I got the icon in
the task bar... but only an icon. I didn't much like having to hover
my cursor over it to see the bandwidth as I really want to see it at a
glance (I had infobar for that job before installing Networx). The
vagaries and quirks of satellite broadband demand this, unfortunately.

I'm trying 'NetSpeedMonitor' right now, which provides the stats at a
glance. It takes up a lot of task bar real estate, but you can't have
everything... I did get a nag screen asking me to 'donate' shortly
after starting it up... fine by me so long as it doesn't keep nagging
me.

Anyway, we shall see how this one goes, cheers.

Not good either, as it also monitors LAN traffic and there seems to be
no way to disable that.

Networx will distinguish between LAN and WAN, and you can have it in
the task bar, but the way it does it isn't very helpful IMO.

  I think you 'missed':

Right-click on the NetWorx icon in the Taskbar -> Show Graph.

This gives the current download and upload speeds and today's
download, upload and total data volumes.

To adjust the details of the graph, right-click -> Settings -> Graph.

For even more detail, right-click -> Usage Report.

[...]

The 'show graph' rings a bell, but at this point I've tried 3 or 4
proggies since posting so I might get them mixed up now. Net Guard
seems to be doing a good job so far.

Interesting, it tells me I used less than 80MB from the time I
installed until midnight. Now that makes sense, whereas the NBN usage
meter says close to 3GB.

Getting constant dropouts this morning... watching the bandwidth meter
sit on 0K/S every minute or so. Even a Firefox download failed. And it
just failed again.

Yes, I know. I'm currently trialling Cucosoft's Netguard. The stats
are not in the task bar but are available at the bottom of the screen.
Also gives stats for each programme running (that connects to the net)
and omits LAN traffic. So far so good.
