#52805 — Malware & Spyware

Fromfelix <me@nothere.invalid>
Date2016-05-21 19:43 +1000
SubjectMalware & Spyware
Message-ID<dqaotlFprcbU1@mid.individual.net>
Been doing a bit of PC cleanup. I have Kaspersky Internet Security
installed and it has not detected any problems. I also have MalwareBytes
and it has not detected any problems either. I have just installed
SpyHunter and ran it, and it has found heaps of stuff, including a
trojan dialer. so far it's listed 202 'infections' and still running.
what gives??!! why is it finding stuff and the others didn't?!

they all miss stuff
Windows Defender tends to pick most up.
I use Spy Hunter which seems best for complete removal.

That depends on how much the hackers ask for when they hold your
computer to ransom! ;-)

Just think of it as just another Microsoft Tax.

That's what I'm thinking. it's a con, and finding stuff that isn't
really spyware or malware. either that or it's SO much better than
everything else. I did a full scan with Kaspersky overnight and it found
nothing. still I'm a little concerned

Yep, probably. A lot of these anti-virus programs behave almost like
viruses themselves (and of course, some are).

Frankly, if you're running three virus programs on the same PC, then
any slow performance is most likely due to them, rather than any
infection. You've been listening to Petzl's advise too much.

I just use Windows Defender on all the time.
once a week I do a full scan with SpyHunter which rarely detects
anything.
That's the only recommendation I have ever given?
Your choice of mal.ware detection is up to you.

which ones are?

I'm not. I'm only running Kaspersky. I just installed and ran the others
to see what they could find, if anything. they are spyware/malware
programs not AV. I wont be having them running. I'll just scan with them
periodically and use them to remove anything they find.

Ransomware sorts that insist they've found a virus and prevent you from
uninstalling them until you've paid for the "full copy". The idea of them
being an anti-virus program is just a vague cover story. They're usually
spread in the same way as other viruses, such as in Email attachments.

If your computer is running OK and Kaspersky says things are fine, why would
you trust these junky free programs to do better? Mind you, I am aware of one
program that is supposably works well and is designed to run once, without
installation. I forget the name, but I'll try to find the bookmark another
time. Mind you, it might well have turned into another spam thing by now.

I was just trying out some programs to evaluate them, and doing some PC
housekeeping. I find the software from this site
http://www.iobit.com/en/index.php to be very good. there are free and
paid versions, and the free versions do offer quite a lot, considering
they're free, and more than other similar free progs I've tried. it did
get rid of a lot of junk and sped the computer up a bit. I also used it
to update drivers, 33 in fact! unfortunately I did them all at once,
which you're not supposed to do, but it worked well, except that the
front USB ports no longer 'see' a USB corded mouse or USB mouse receiver
for a cordless mouse, but they do see USB sticks. weird huh? the rear
USB ports work fine. so that is the only issue I need to resolve. do you
have any clues?

I'll just add too that their uninstaller is great. after it uninstalls a
prog it goes looking for leftover stuff like registry entries, folders,
etc/., and removes them too, so you don't need to run Ccleaner or such

Only a technical explanation, which is that keyboards and mice are usually
recognised by windows as a special "HID Device" class, which means they can
use the internal generic windows drivers instead of looking for a driver
specifically matched to the model of mouse/keyboard.

Practically speaking, if you have any mouse driver software installed,
uninstall it (there probably much advantage to running it anyway).
Otherwise, of course you could downgrade your USB driver software.

And of course look at what it says in Device Manager.

My advice: Do *NOT* update drivers, *unless* you have a problem which
*specifically* relates to a *specific* driver and then update only that
driver.

yes, good advice a little late. unfortunately I trusted the software to
do it. the computer is running better, as a lot of drivers needed
updating, but it has created the problem of the front USB ports not
'seeing' a corded mouse or the receiver for a cordless mouse. but the
sockets do have power, and will load USB sticks. so far I have been
unable to fix this issue. I tried uninstalling all USB drivers and
everything in the HID and mouse sections of device manager, but to no
avail. I have been able to use the cordless mouse by plugging the
receiver into a rear USB socket via a USB hub, but the computer wont
boot unless I first unplug the receiver from the hub. weird goings on. I
remembered after using this driver install software that drivers are
supposed to be installed one at a time so any problem can be associated
with a specific driver.

Just one more thing you could try: turning off PS/2 emulation of USB
mouse in the BIOS, if the option is there.

Any error message when the computer won't boot?
