Anyone tell me what in the modem causes wi fi connected laptop running, for instance iview using adobe flash to cease functioning? Reboot of modem fixes it.

Which modem ? Some are notorious for not doing the wifi very well at all.

Presumably it's the higher volume done in the way that adobe flash uses it that is what makes the problem with the modem's wifi visible and that gets fixed with a reset.

Your problem has nothing to do with flash or anything else on your laptop. The problem you have is to do with the TD-W8960N itself . TheTD-W8960N is a cheap entry level modem that only has a NAT size of 5020 and 64 Mb of Ram and is not good for heavy torrenting or live streaming as it overloads the NAT, fills up the Ram and causes slow network problems and at times drop outs in either the wifi or the adsl connection. When you re-boot the modem , it clears the NAT and it is empty to start all over again until the live streaming and other usage fills up the NAT again. The wifi on the TD-W8960N is also somewhat crappy and only single band N300 wifi and it also only has 10/100 Ethernet ports on it. Nothing you do will fix your drop out problem other than either to the stop live streaming or get a more powerful modem. These days , the TD-W8960N is only mainly used as a bridged modem in a separate modem + router set-up , and at times used as a standalone modem/router all in one combo , by cheap sods that are too cheap to fork out any money for a decent modem. Save yourself all the time and effort and just go out and buy a TP-Link Archer D7 with dual band 1750 AC wifi for $170 , it has a NAT size of 10200 and 256 Mb of Ram that is more than sufficient to do live streaming and heavy internet usage. -- Sandgroper -------------------------------------------- Save planet Earth ! The surges were not in the power supply but in the copper phone line.

Well then , if you keep blowing up the modem for some reason , then the only option for you is to get a bridged modem + router set up so that the modems are cheap to replace when they blow up while at the same time you have the router with enough grunt , large NAT and 256 Mb of Ram to handle the live streaming , torrenting , gamimg and general internet usage. Keep the existing TD-W8960N , bridge it and then add a router to it , something like the TP-Link Archer C9 ( don't get the C7 , it has wifi issues ) or the better one if you can afford it , the ASUS RT-AC68U AC 1900 . Both of these routers have large NATs and 256 Mb of Ram which will fix your problem with the overloading the NAT and causing drop outs , wifi issues and slow networking. If you keep blowing up your modems , then you may have an over voltage on your line , you will need to contact telstra to lodge a line fault and to get them to check out your line as a phone line should not have an excessive amount of voltage on the line that exceeds 50 volts. Makes sense to have a decent router behind it with the TD-W8960N in bridged mode and cheap to replace if it happens again.

No there was actually more than 5 overall the first two were bigpond supplied Thomson, then dlink a few different tplink, the best being TD-W8980 a couple of netgear, all with ethernet ports blowing up. I have since installed something similar to this connected to earth and so far so good. https://www.dropbox.com/s/so4kyivkxqkpxrq/sku_67685_1.jpg?dl=0 > >> always had a crappy line, they had my broadband slowed down >> deliberately to allow for it, the tech on the last fault has rerouted >> through different pairs so hope it will be better, > > Sure, but that wouldn't have been the reason > you went thru 5 routers in 6 months.

At least I do not know for certain it was the ethernet sockets but the sockets did not seem to work and the modem seemed to have the various lights working This has been going on for three years with a spate of a few in quick succession during last year Things have been ok for over six months with the surge arrester in line(may have nothing to do with it) except for line faults, the last, broadband worked but not telephone, that is when the linesman rerouted my line on different pairs.

What GPOs do the router and the PCs run from. If they are not the same (Alongside oneanother) then random changes in loads may produce random differences in the ground potentials and hence random destruction of devices connected by the tiny paths in the ethernet adapters. -- John G Sydney.
