This 'problem' of having to buy a new OS - which BTW was/is also true for Vista users - has mostly been a theoretical one. Most XP machines were too small - memory, CPU and disk wise - to run Vista or later and for most of them, it was not economically feasible or/and technically possible to upgrade the hardware. For the small minority where the hardware could be upgraded, the 'problem' was also theoretical, because the 'cost' of a new OS was peanuts. For example when I needed to replace Vista [1] in May last year (2015), a Windows 7 license was some 25 dollars. Big fsck-ing deal! So, I'm currently on 8.1 and will probably won't risk another 'upgrade' to 10, because 10 isn't ready for prime time (It's not even ready for non-prime time!). If I need to upgrade to 10 (way) post July this year, I'll take my chances or/and bite the bullet and fork the needed dollars. YMMV and probably YMWV. [1] For other reasons, I ended up buying a new 8.1 system, but that's another matter.
