RADIX50 is not a DEC invention. It was created, IIRC, by IBM for the first
FORTRAN compiler, which ran on the 36-bit 704. RADIX50 allowed 6 characters
in 32 bits, with encoding for what kind of symbol was represented. DEC took
that lesson to heart.
One could also note that there were several incompatible RADIX50 character
sets--including an incompatibility between the PDP-10 and the PDP-11.
