One last thing to look at. Enter this into a terminal and
tell me what it says:

python --version

Python 2.7.17

The problem happens on line 22: 'import Image'. Is there a way to force
install / reinstall for 'Image'? (Probably / maybe part of 'ImageTk' ?)

Command 'apt' does not seem to know about 'Image' or 'ImageTk'.

Image is part of python-pil. Make sure that is installed. It
almost has to be because it is a depends for python-pil.imagetk.
But, then again, you used dpkg so it is possible.

apt-cache policy python-pil

If it is installed then the problem might be related to the
python version you are using. Sometimes syntax can change
a little with a newer version. I am using 2.7.13.

Open a terminal and run python by entering python. That
will run the interpreter in interactive mode. Enter these
commands one at a time to see if you get an error...

import Image

from PIL import Image

If the last one gives an error then enter this...

import PIL
from PIL import Image

Let me know which ones throw an error and which ones don't.

To exit python, enter this...

quit()

mike@VPCEB37FD:~$ python
Python 2.7.17 (default, Apr 15 2020, 17:20:14)
[GCC 7.5.0] on linux2
Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.

  File "<stdin>", line 1
    import PIL from PIL import Image
                  ^

>>> quit()

So:

'import Image' does not work.
'from PIL import Image' does not give an error.

The last command you said only if #2 did *not* work ('import PIL from PIL
import Image'), but I added in case it might show something useful.

That confirmed what we already knew.

That means it worked!

OK, this tells me what I need to know. I believe it is what I
said about differences in syntax in a newer version. If I am
correct the fix will require an edit of the makeface-tk script.
Open /opt/makeface-tk/makeface-tk.py into a text editor as root.
The change will be made to line 22 only. Follow upper/lower
case as indicated.

Line 22 has now...
import Image
Change it to...
from PIL import Image
Save change.

Let me know. I might need to install Mint 19.3 into a VM and do
some testing here. I will certainly need to do an update on the
deb.

That moved the error to line 23. At that point, I made a leap of faith
and changed the next seven lines from 'import' to 'from PIL import'

It turns out, it was only necessary on the two lines (line 22 & 23).

(Errors with lines 24 through 30.)

Lines 22 & 23 are now:

from PIL import Image
from PIL import ImageTk

Your 'makeface-py' program now works perfectly. I can run it by command:

/opt/makeface-tk/makeface-tk.py

Also, the existing main menu item works ( Graphics / Makeface-tk )

I will attempt to add the 'Face:' header to this post.

Okay, obviously I was not paying attention, and I put the string 'Face: '
in twice, and the avatar did not show up despite that the malformed
header was, in fact, communicated successfully to Eternal-September.

I re-did the post correctly, but I now get the error:

Posting of "Re: Pan2 doubled Usenet headers." failed: 441 invalid syntax
encountered in headers (unexpected byte, no colon-space, or empty content
line)

So now we have come full circle. We did fix a minor problem (lines 22 &
23; change 'import' to 'from PIL import') in makeface-tk.py .

However, the problem remains that pan cannot transmit headers of type X-
Face: *or* Face: to Eternal-September, despite that ES is able to pass on
such headers received from other NNTP servers.

I have little doubt that both headers work fine from Thunderbird, or from
pan if using an NNTP server different than ES.

But Thunderbird really lacks so much functionality that I cannot see it
worth my effort even to verify if that is true. I will if you want, but
from a pragmatic point of view, I have already put more effort into this
than it is worth to have an NNTP avatar. The main reason I continued thus
far was simply to pay you back for the effort you made to help me out in
the first place.

Thanks again. I move for closure on this thread.

 It seems to me that you did add an X-face header with
 a  wrong content.

Yes & no. It was a "Face:" header, not 'X-Face:'.

It was corrupted (It started with 'Face: Face:' instead of 'Face:'.) ES
accepted it, but since the header was corrupted, Pan did not show me my
'Face:'.

Curiously, when the header was fixed (Just one 'Face: ', ES not longer
accepted it as valid and also refused to accept the entire post.

This is the same manner of failure as with an 'X-Face: ' header.

FWIW, Thunderbird can send both types of headers (Face: & X-Face:) to the
Eternal-September server. Also, Pan can send both types of headers to
other NNTP servers.

I have given up on Pan & ES using either type of header.

Just installed Wildman's makeface...made an imager and trying it out with

It looks like you have put the Face header into the place
where the X-Face goes. Your header starts like this...

X-Face: Face:

The Face header should go where is says "Extra headers".

In general terms you are correct but, to be more precise
the X-Face header is a compressed 48x48 XBM image. The
Face header is a base64-encoded 48x48 PNG image.
