The Whois internet service is apparently being replaced with RDAP. But

There is no package called "rdap" in Mageia 9, x86_64.

This notice when you run a Whois ..

**NOTICE** This WHOIS server is being retired. Please use our RDAP

Maybe openRDAP? -- DISCLAIMER I have not looked to see if it's
included in M9.

Where are you getting that notice from?

https://github.com/icann/icann-rdap/wiki/RDAP-command

https://rdap.rcode3.com/client_implementations/cli_applications.html

However, the availability of rdap is not so wide; there is a rdap for
Deb, but for such as Ub/s, there isn't a .ppa or a flatpak, but there is
a Snap.

OpenRDAP is written in Go; there is a rdap for Arch in the AUR.

It seems to me that the conventional linux repo/s are 'backward' in this
regard. rdap has been around a very long time.

I booted a live LMDE LinuxMint DebianEdition and its repo/s included the
OpenRDAP commandline client implemented in Go, not installed by default.

Ha.

I didn't know about repology:

https://repology.org/project/rdap/versions

Repology further illustrates the concept that a LOT of (most, almost all
except...) linux distro/s do NOT have RDAP package in their repo/s.

I left all of the (stale) preceding untrimmed for 'direct' background
context.

My comments ranging from rdap to repology was all about the availability
of *client packages* for openrdap in various distro/s.

Your link is about the availability of a web-based rdap function.

Lotsa diff between web-based rdap and a particular client package in a
distro/s repo/s.

There is also an openrdap site here:
https://www.openrdap.org/

Now that I'm 'getting into' this, there is an interesting 'back story'
(I LUV b/s) in its wp article about the problems w/ the development and
the implementation, which has been going on for years.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Registration_Data_Access_Protocol

Things are still somewhat incomplete because of what might be considered
the 'complexity' (not TOO bad) as well as the 'compliance' (limited to
recency).
