Hm. I must have been looking at an Mga5 machine. I see it here on this
Mga6 machine, and it does have switch user.

Of course that is useless if my session in in its lockscreen/screensaver and she
wants to use the machine while I am at work.

You guys are too advanced for me.
I use xdm/fvwm/xscreensaver.
When locked, xscreensaver has a "New login" button.
Never tried it though, but it is there.

If she's logged in before you go to work, then before you go just use Ctl
+Esc+F2 to swap into her session greeter?

Actulally she could do that from your screenlocker.

IMHO configuring the display manager to start in multi seat mode it's
faster and more stable than starting a new session from the
screenlocker. In the OP case he knows how many sessions he needs and
could even make it auto login for each user too, which should make
things really smooth for him and his wife.

I do not like auto login-- it is insecure since we have "strangers" come
in and stay with us. I do not like to leave an open session for them.

Good point, but perhaps can ensure access only via password? (More
reading to do...)

Mmm. That sounds useful. Will give it a try when I've figured out how to
arrange it.

Actually, from your screenlocker she could e.g. Ctl+ Alt+F2 to her own.

It she is already logged in, of course. However, if not, then the only
way I know is for her to do alt-ctrl-F2 , log into the console and do
startx -- :2

Run systemsettings5. Under Workspace, select Startup and Shutdown. Under
Desktop Session ensure "Offer shutdown options" is selected. Logout and
back in for the change to take effect.

I have no clue as to the problem. I switched to Xfce DE back on mga5 and
created a desktop shortcut to use dm-tool for switching users.

I click my taxes shortcut and it runs dm-tool switch-to-user taxes.
I click my browser shortcut and it runs dm-tool switch-to-user browser
You might try it for fun just to see if it works under SDDM.

If I were you I would try using the kde/plasma switch user menu selection.
If that fails, you might try putting
  switch users sddm
in the first box at https://encrypted.google.com/advanced_search
