The Univac 1100's that I spent 5 years with (1970-1975) were 36-bit
machines inspired by IBM's 700/7000 family. They were performing well
for
- Scientific computation, where their 36-bit floating point was mostly
good enough, so you did not need double precision
- Real-Time applications, where they had low latency and short
pathlengths for interrupts as well as good OS support for real-time
responsiveness, a legacy of their 30-bit predecessors
- transaction processing, where their FastRand drums were available
early in the market
The CPU register/memory instructions had fields to select partial words:
LA,H1 R1,DATA
There were
HalfWords H1, H2
QuarterWords Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4
Sixths S1, S2, S3, S4, S5, S6
Originally, all text fields were in 6-bit characters called FIELDATA.
Later, to accommodate lowercase, it became reasonably common to put
7-bit ASCII into quarter-words (9 bits).
When the Memorex Storage Module disk drives took over the world of
storage, and nine-track tapes became the standard, the I/O channels
started placing nine 8-bit bytes into two 36-bit words. That became
somewhat painful to unpack.

When I last looked at the 1108, they supported three different character sets: Fielddata (6-bit, for the army), BCD, and ASCII. I believe they had at least two different COBOL compilers, Fielddata And ASCII, and maybe three. -- Pete

In those days, machine instruction sets were designed for humans to program in. Machine families like the PDP-10 and PDP-11 were highly regarded for being refreshingly free of seemingly arbitrary and capricious restrictions that tended to plague prior designs just to make the hardware easier to implement. The acme of this trend was, of course, the DEC VAX. And also a microprocessor design that tried to copy that richness of instruction set, the 32x00 family from Western Electric. Unfortunately some spoilsports discovered that such complex instruction sets were suboptimal when it came to actual performance. And furthermore that well-designed compilers could routinely generate better code than any mere human assembly-language programmer. And so the good times ended ... ... doesn’t mean we can’t still play, though ...

Branch delay slots took whatever fun there was out of RISC assembly language. The DEC Alpha didn't have them, but a few other architectures did. (I just looked up "delay slot" -- just because it's been so long since I used the term in a sentence -- and I found a five-year-old Stack Overflow discussion about delay slots being out of fashion. I had no idea.) Louis

There was this brief window during about the latter 1980s when they were thought to be a good idea ... just long enough for a few RISC architectures (SPARC, MIPS, I think also PA-RISC) to be saddled with them. By 1990 or so, hardware design had progressed to the point where they were no longer considered necessary. So POWER and Alpha were able to do without them, without sacrificing performance. Though they did survive for a few years longer in special-purpose DSP architectures.

I found the burroughs medium systems instruction set a joy to work with. As it was a BCD machine, everything was in decimal. Take an add instruction, that adds two 8 digit fields and produces an 8 digit result: 02 0808 001000 002000 003000 OP AFBF AAAAAA BBBBBB CCCCCC The first two digits (8 bits) is the opcode. 02 = ADD. The next two digits are the A field size, in either bytes or nibbles/digits based on the address controller for the A field, the following two digits are similarly the B field size. The C field size is the larger of the A or B field sizes for ADD/SUB, and double for MPY; for DIV, both the remainder and quotient were stored in the C field. The field sizes ranges from 1 to 100 units (00 = 100). The high-order digit of the address field selected the data type in two bits (Unsigned Numeric, Signed Numeric, Unsigned Alpha or indirect) and the remaining two bits selected one of three index registers to add to the remaining address. For the UA datatype, the processor ignored the zone digit when doing arithmetic on the operand and supplied the correct zone digit on output based on the ASCII flag. Mixed datatypes were fully supported (with some unintuitive handling of the sign in UA types). The indirect address type allowed infinite indirection, for which the processor included a timer to abort the operation if it looped indefinitely. The operand fields were extended from six digits to eight digits in the B4700 (early 70s) to support full six-digit addresses (plus four additional index registers in the V380 circa 1984) without breaking existing compiled B3500 applications.
