You're just being silly.
The word size in the PDP-5/PDP-8 is 12 bits. There's no need for scare quotes
around the word "word". The addressable memory unit in that architecture is
the word, so 4096KW is 49,152 bits, with addresses 0 to 4095 (most often
expressed in octal as 0 to 7777).

But the 49152 bits is 4096 _words_, so KW is clearly not kilowords.

It's not a meaningful comparison. The PDP-6, on which the -10 was based, was designed in 1963 in an era when each transistor was in a separate can and 64K 36 bit words of hand-strung core was a whole lot of memory. It got excellent performance out of a design that was practical to build in that era. It addressed 36 bit words because most of the scientific machines in that era did, since the IBM 704. In that expensive memory era, the way the -10 packed five 7-bit ASCII characters into a word with only one wasted bit was pretty slick. These days we think that all bytes are 8 bits but in that era 6 or 7 or 9 were all common. I don't ever recall writing code on a PDP-10 that used 8 bit bytes other than maybe unpacking magtapes from IBM systems. The VAX was developed over a decade later, when they put thousands of transistors on each logic chip and thousands of bits in each memory chip. It suffered from a severe case of second system syndrome, where they started from the elegant PDP-11 and added every feature a programmer could ever possibly want, with less than fabulous performance to match. There's a reason that the VAX inspired RISC systems. -- Regards, John Levine, johnl@taugh.com, Primary Perpetrator of "The Internet for Dummies", Please consider the environment before reading this e-mail. https://jl.ly

There's a reason that the VAX inspired RISC systems. I think RISC development started about concurrently with the origins of VAX. And VAX remained a popular system until about the late 1980s, when RISC finally came to everyone’s notice. Having VAX as an example of how not to do things no doubt helped popularize the concept. ;) The “big bang” for RISC was about 1988-1990, when a bunch of Unix workstation vendors brought out machines based on MIPS, SPARC, PA-RISC, and of course POWER. And there was Acorn with ARM (not sure if that was used for any Unix workstations at the time). At that point, the writing was on the wall for CISC.

I've claimed that John Cocke did RISC/801 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Cocke_(computer_scientist) https://www.ibm.com/history/john-cocke The effort to develop RISC began in 1974, when IBM tasked Cocke and a team of researchers with creating an exchange controller to automate telephone switching -- phone calls were then largely handled by human operators who plugged cords into switchboards. Although IBM canceled the controller project in 1975, the team's efforts morphed into the creation of the first prototype computer that used RISC. The new system's power and efficiency became foundational to computer evolution up to the present day. as counter to the Future System complexity, future system http://www.jfsowa.com/computer/memo125.htm https://people.computing.clemson.edu/~mark/fs.html folklore is that the complexity of "Future System" was countermeasure to the clone/compatible competition. FS was completely different from 370 and was going to completely replace 370 and internal politics during FS, was killing off 370 efforts (the lack of new 370 during the period is credited with given clone 370 makers, including Amdahl, more market foothold). All during FS, I continued to work on 370 and would periodically ridicule FS, including analogy with long playing cult film down in central sq (lots of blue sky stuff going on with little idea on how it might be implemented). One of the last nails in the FS coffin was analysis by the IBM Houston Scientific Center that if 370/195 applications were redone for FS machine made out of the fastest technology available, it would have throughput of 370/145 (about 30 times slowdown). -- virtualization experience starting Jan1968, online at home since Mar1970

The Berkeley RISC work started in 1978 but as far as I know the 801 and RISC projects were unaware of each other. They made similar observations that most programs used only a small fraction of the instructions on the computers they were using (Vax and 360 resepectively) so how about building something simple that just had the useful instructions and ran really fast. The projects were different in some important ways. Most notably the 801 was developed in tandem with the state of the art PL.8 compiler, while Berkeley used the not very sophisticated PCC compiler. Berkeley invented register windows to deal with PCCs simplistic register management, while the PL.8 compiler optimized away most register saves so the 801 didn't need anything beyond regular loads and stores. -- Regards, John Levine, johnl@taugh.com, Primary Perpetrator of "The Internet for Dummies", Please consider the environment before reading this e-mail. https://jl.ly

It is interesing how different people came to different conclusions.
I have a book by Andrew Tannenbaum where he pitches "high level
machines" implementing complex instructions via microcode. He
also cites research showing that low end IBM machines can perform
many times faster when compiler generates internal microcode
instead of 360 instructions. But he did not notice that those
microcode experiments suggest building machines which can execute
simple instructions quickly (that is RISC) and not the "high
level machines" that he pitched.

For various reasons all these floundered and things returned to doing custom CISC ... and saw some number of the engineers leave for other vendors. RISC ROMP was going to be for the DISPLAYWRITER follow-on running CP.r and PL.8 ... but it got canceled (lot of that market was moving to PCs). It was then decided to pivot to the unix workstation market and they got the company that had done AT&T UNIX port to the IBM/PC for PC/IX to do "AIX" for PC/RT (follow-on was mutli-chip RIOS for RS/6000). IBM 801 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_801 The First RISC: John Cocke and the IBM 801 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33055361 Computer Chronicles Revisited 65 -- The IBM RT PC https://www.smoliva.blog/post/computer-chronicles-revisited-065-ibm-rt-pc/ ... note in above: Birnbaum had been head of (IBM Research) Yorktown Computer Science and some people that had been working late 70s on 801 left for HP Labs ... and I got email asking if I might be joining them. I was in San Jose Research, but also had offices&labs out in Los Gatos VLSI labs that were doing "Blue Iliad" (1st 32bit 801/risc chip ... large, hot chip, never came to fruition). Before announced/ship, IBM executive Nick Donofrio approved HA/6000 product, originally for NYTimes to move their newspaper system (ATEX) off VAXCluster to RS/6000. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_High_Availability_Cluster_Multiprocessing I rename it HA/CMP when I start doing technical/scientific cluster scale-up with national labs (LANL, NCAR, LLNL, etc) and commercial cluster scale-up with RDBMS vendors (Oracle, Sybase, Ingres, Informix) that had VAXCluster support in same source base with unix (I do a distributed lock manager that support VAXCluster API semantics to simplify port). Then IBM S/88 product administer starts taking us around to their customers and also gets me to write a section for the corporate continuouus available strategy document (it gets pulled when both Rochester/AS400 and POK/mainframe complain that they can't meet the requirements) Early Jan1992, have meeing with Oracle CEO, IBM/AWD executive Hester tells Ellison that we would have 16-system clusters mid92 and 128-system cluster ye92. Then late Jan1992, cluster scale-up is transferred for announce as IBM Supercomputer (technical/scientific *ONLY*) and we are told we can't work on anything with more than four processors (we leave IBM a few months later). -- virtualization experience starting Jan1968, online at home since Mar1970
