I was fascinated with his novels as a kid but that > was a long time ago. I also liked 'Swiss Family Robinson', 'Robinson > Crusoe' not so much. Defoe's style was a little archaic while 'Swiss > Family' may have been improved by translation. Verne is worth re-reading. He was quite good, esp for his time. Kept company with all the top tech and industry people of his era - so his 'sci-fi' was often closer to 'bleeding-edge'. There have been a few good films of Wells stuff also - the early 60s "First Men In The Moon", the Rod Taylor "Time Machine" and the Gene Barry 'War Of The Worlds' update. Also been BAD films. The odd WOTW with Tom Cruise was weird ... the same story, but from a Joe Anybody's on the street perspective. Home-made spark-gap ... CAN be done. However if you wanna TUNE it you'd better have a Google-like knowledge of winding inductors and the formulas for caps made from little scraps of metal and the relevant resonance equations. Some DO ... even more 50 years ago. I know what NEEDS to be done - but those formulas/tables, long gone from the memory bank. If about to be lost at sea or cast upon an island, always travel with a copy of Glover's "Pocket Ref". Everything in there you'd ever need.

We doan need no steenking tune. https://earlyradiohistory.us/1901true.htm Marconi and DeForest were involved but everyone was using very dirty transmitters and effectively jamming each other. It took a few years before it developed beyond pumping a lot of energy into an antenna and hoping for the best.

Maybe more than you think. Many hydraulic pumps were fixed volume, 5 gpm or whatever. Hook the output to something like a hydraulic ram and the pressure in the system is low, just enough to overcome friction or gravity depending on the orientation. Then the ram meets the work and stops moving. Pressure builds and the pump will happily blow itself up. Enter the pressure relief valve. You can adjust it for 2000 psi or whatever clamping force you want, and most of the 5 gpm is diverted back to the tank. Enter the 7805 linear regulator. Same deal. Voltage drop * current or Pressure drop * gpm, it all gets converted to waste heat. It's been a long time but the equations used to roll off my tongue to calculate the horsepower of the electric motor to handle the flow and pressure. Parker Hannifin came out with a servo controlled pump that was supposed to handle the problem. That's when I learned that when a manufacturer ships you something where the serial number starts with X, congratulations, you're a beta tester. All that was hot, dirty, and noisy, and I've been hosed down with hydraulic fluid more than once but I loved it. Controlling stuff in the real world gave me a satisfaction I never got from dealing with GUIs. I've sort of come full circle in my golden years playing with microcontrollers, sensors, servos, and the like.

I think that's more in tune with human psychology. The tech stuff - VERY recent, VERY abstract. Was watching a doc about DaVinci today - fascinating polymath for sure. Likely IQ-200 by today's measures. He was fascinated by many things - which included MACHINES. Little but wood/metal back then but he designed all sorts of fascinating solutions, or attempted solutions. He even made a 'programmable' robot of sorts to amuse his patron. But I wondered if he'd find modern tech nearly as interesting. Isn't "visceral", "intuitive", enough. Still thinking about the low->high pressure "hydraulic transformer" ........ something like a big piston driving a small piston, maybe with mechanical leverage involved .... but CAN be done. The 'plumbing' analogy holds.

The 'plumbing' analogy holds. We inadvertently built one of those when a check valve was installed backwards. If you think about a double-acting cylinder the side that is used to apply force is the full diameter of the cylinder. The other side only needs enough area to retract the cylinder, so the rod fills most of it with only a small annular area. Put the check valve in the retract circuit and try to move the ram by pressuring the other side with, say, a 15:1 difference in the areas and 2000 psi and you develop 30,000 psi, enough to bulge a 12" cylinder. The bulge wasn't visible but was enough so the piston wouldn't seal. Big chunk of scrap. Even worse it came from a British firm and they were having one of their dock strikes so the replacement had to be air freighted. On r/embedded a young intern was worried because he had smoked a sensor on a $80 development board and wondered how much trouble he was in. I was thinking "Kid, you haven't even started to screw up.".

I was > thinking "Kid, you haven't even started to screw up.". Heh heh ... yea, the Magic Smoke often fills the air during development :-) A "step-down transformer" is dead easy to do with fluids - basically you just use pressure to turn a valve. High-pressure/low-volume releases low- pressure high volume ... 'DC' even. But a "step-UP" ... not sure of the best way to do that. "Big piston with a small end" will work, but to get continuous high pressure it still seems you'd need some kind of oscillating action to keep pumping that piston. Do-able, but less clean. However there may be a trick where you change the VELOCITY of the low-pressure stream and tap off the high-speed vortex. The Egyptians or Inca probably invented it already ...... Oh geez, TV, they're still digging up Egypt looking for Cleopatra. She was an expert on drugs/toxins so my guess is that she didn't die of suicide, just adequately simulated death. Even easier to just poison a body-double servant, let the poison kinda mess-up the corpse. Likely she went into Syria or something after the ruse with an assumed name and adequate box of coin. They'll find her somewhere near Damascus.

I remember my entry into IT - programming moves, adds and changes on a
Northern Telecom PBX. I got a 3 hour training session from our service
provider who reminded me that I was a "billable problem".
Luckily, I don't think I ruined any hardware - but may have needed some
help in backing out some software changes...

Are those things still in use much? You have had open-source products like Asterisk, Kamailio etc for the past 20-or-so years that can do everything they can do, and more.

The Nortel stuff is dying out, but there's still some around. If you've
invested a lot in a big SL-1 installation, replacing it is going to cost
enough to make you want to think about it first.
Nortel's assets were acquired by Avaya, who treat it as a second product
line ("Avaya Blue") alongside their primary offering ("Avaya Red").

PBX programming was always weird. Regardless of manufacturer they seems to be doing it in a similar style. Done with a deskset, typing in function codes (usually 3 digits), extension numbers to which they applied and values for the feature. Somewhere in a pile on the back of my desk, I think I still have a die-cut keypad overlay sheet; but I cannot remember if it is from the NorStar system or the Panasonic KX-T system that succeeded it. The Norstar apparently used an ISDN-BRI derivative to talk with the handsets. These days, we use Grandstream IP telephones served by CallCentric. We used to pay $200/month for 3 POTS lines (one for a fax line). These days we pay about $15/month for as many extensions as we care to use (not very many for "4 guys in a garage"). The main problem we have with the cheap system is hackers that trick the phones to dial into "900-service" type lines in the Balkans. Solved by firewalling: These phones are only allowed to talk to the "Central Office" in upstate New York.
