   Sounds familiar ... though 'C' became available on

   ASM can give you kind of a buzz, makes you one
   with the machine.

   Alas if I'd learned more COBOL then I could have
   had a lucrative retirement income supp maintaining
   all those old biz/ops code. Still LOTS of it in
   use and it's too expensive now to replace. If it
   works you hang on to it with a death grip.

Depends on what you want to do. Assembler is a lot more fun, but I wouldn’t
want to write a payroll system in it.

It’s not just COBOL any more, it’s all COBOL/CICS/DB2. Same with PL/I.

I recall one project that used a macroassembler to create sort of a subset
of C. My reaction was 'Okay, but why?'. I suppose it made sense in an era
when people felt compelled to write their own editors. Or, Gods forbid,
they learned enough about lex and yacc to be really dangerous.

When all you had was Macro assembler, writing a good library of Macros
gave you almost a high level language, except it wasn't portable.

C *was* portable, mostly.

And it was faster to write than Macros assembler. It was really a no
brainer.

Interesting to follow comp.lang.c, where just about every week or two
someone wants to use some common function, only to discover that it is
actually part of POSIX, not in the C language spec itself. So it is
available on Linux, but not Microsoft Windows.

Sadly, macros made their way into C. The basic idea was fine but we had
one programmer who laid awake nights thinking up new perverted things to
do with macros. I forget if it was Kernighan or Ritchie who later said if
they had only known what people would do with them...

C++ doubled down with inline functions.

Yeah. I tend to agree with your view here.
Macros that are part of some library that are explicitly documented are
one thing : Random 'LIGHT_MY_FIRE(a,b,c)' not so much.

I probably do far too much with a standalone macro processor...

   It's unfortunately NOT hard to make 'C' *totally
   unreadable*, impossible to follow. Sometimes you
   see the young hot-shots cram a dozen lines worth
   of stuff into a single line with LOTS of punctuation
   characters and bracket tricks. It's also possible to
   obfuscate using too many, esp nested, macros.

   Thing is, those ultra-compacted lines don't really
   run any faster - the same functions and ops are
   being run regardless.

   Being kinda old-school my pgms always look like
   something from the K&R book, and with comments
   after almost every line. THAT you can read a
   day from now, or a year from now ....

Yes.Even the ? operator gets clumsy if it is being used to fork two
different paths of complex code.

Much better to use an 'If' with some long blocks, or even inline
function for clarity and still retain the speed.

   Esp with 'C', it's DIFFICULT to keep it READABLE.
   Difficult to make sure even YOU can understand
   how it works in a day, a week, a year.

   The K&R look and feel is pretty good for that.
   Alas the lang makes it possible to completely
   ruin that approach - and many DO, just because
   they can, makes 'em look more clever.

   But the code doesn't REALLY compile/run much faster.
   SAME underlying STUFF being done regardless.

   So :

     if(x>y)
     {
       .....
     }
     else
     {
       .....
     }

   I pref to not put the leading bracket on the
   same line as the 'if' or 'else' because then
   it's easier to pick out the block by eye -
   just look for the '{' on the left.

       if(x>y)
        {
          .....
        } // end of if clause
      else
        {
          .....
        } //end of else clauses

Because it clearly identifies the two branches by making them
differently indented

And in fact these days with inline functions

if(x>y)
       fubar(x,y,z);
else
       rabuf (z,y,x);

Is even shorter and allows the program flow rather than the
implementation to be seen clearly.

I wonder if compilers actually inline functions that are only called once.

Most of my functions ARE called only once.

They are there to perform specific tasks, like initialise hardware or
connect the wi fi.

Modern compilers will often inline functions that aren’t declared
inline, yes; I don’t know if “only called once” is a consideration. It’s
not implausible (possibly in a more general form, e.g. “will inlining
all calls take more or less space overall?”)

My complier writing friend suggested that if the function were declared
static, and the function only called once. it certainly could be
inlined, but he was not sure at what optimisation level of gcc it would be.

Some would probably get on your case for being profligate with vertical
space... but honestly, it doesn't much matter with the kind of screen
real estate we have these days. I do agree that your style has

Yes. Back in the day when I debugged with 80 column dot matrix
printouts, it got messy.
To day with collapsible blocks on a gui it's a lot easier

I still prefer statements that don't exceed 80 columns.

I keep them that way, too. It’s a bit harder to follow across longer lines.
That’s one reason I really miss the 3290. There was an optional full-width
dotted underscore line that could follow the cursor up and down. It made it
easy to read across a full 160-column line. I haven’t found an editor that
will do that.

Found this package for Emacs
<https://github.com/emacs-mirror/emacs/blob/master/lisp/hl-line.el>
... does that help?

Thanks. So far I’ve assiduously avoided emacs, but I might have to learn
it. Multics has emacs or a couple of line editors like edlin.
