Did you just change DEFINE TYPE COMP AS COMP-3 to DEFINE TYPE COMP as COMP-4 and that would take effect everywhere that COMP was used? Oh, wait, COBOL didn’t have typedefs ...

I suppose I could have done the equivalent of s/COMP-3/COMP-4/ in the text editor of the day, but that would have also changed the fields that were not only legitimately COMP-3, but which could not have been held in a COMP-4 variable. Did COBOL even HAVE real "types" ??? It was not really a "sophisticated" language. It was MEANT mostly for biz/commercial apps, esp financial and scheduling. It was GOOD at that - except for being TOO ugly/confusing in the chase to be "simple/self-documenting". I don't hate COBOL - it HAD/HAS its place. However the real-world implementation could never live-up to "The Vision". COBOL could/can be "improved" - made more efficient. But NOBODY is gonna DO that these days. As such COBOL kinda becomes like 'Latin' - an unchanging 'dead' lang. This MAY be a good thing.

Batch processing *enormous* quantities of data with a few small routines. It was designed for and on machines with very small memories, initially core store, but very large data sets stored on hard drives or tapes, and is massively efficient at utilising that. 64k of RAM and a z80 was a luxury for COBOL Its ideas about data organisation led to the relational database. And thence SQL and friends A subject about which most people here know very little. Analysing businesses and writing code to streamline their operations is a different art to network programming. *All* the hard work is in the analysis and initial data definitions and structures. Back in the day the lowliest part of that process was the 'coder' who simply turned the specs into clean COBOL ....:-) -- The theory of Communism may be summed up in one sentence: Abolish all private property. To construct SQL queries, you really needed good dynamic string handling, and COBOL explicitly eschewed all that. So SQL handling was always some kind of bag on the side, rather than properly integrated into the language.

I'd tend to say WELL-FOCUSED on its INTENDED uses - at least as best they understood them in the late 60s. "Net" - few even DREAMED. And COBOL is STILL with us, just under the skin. Lots of those 60s pgms writ by narrow-tie horn-rim-glasses Dilberts STILL doing their thing. NOT dead at all. I looked over the shoulder of my bank person while they were fixing-up some shit recently - LOOK & FEEL of a COBOL pgm, very "terminal", very biz focused. And now few can AFFORD/DARE to re-write What Just Works ... so COBOL will be around for another couple of decades fer sure until/if "AI" gets REALLY good. There's REALLY GOOD MONEY in maintaining/tweaking existing COBOL apps BTW. I know a guy, kinda MADE his retirement nest-egg that way ......

Because, you know, politicians keep wanting to know why so many tax dollars are going into the increasing costs of maintaining “legacy” systems. Financial institutions? See above.

I've agreed with him though that like so many old
languages COBOL *will* eventually fade away. What
replaces it may or may not be "better" but there
just aren't many people willing/able to do COBOL
anymore, so ....
There's always a psychology in the computer world
that immediately embraces the "Newest/Greatest Thing"
whether it's actually good/improved or not. Shit, I
remember when 'C' was in that category ... that one
DID hang on :-)
There's a parallel thread here started by someone
who hates "Rust". It too is one of those "newest/
greatest things" so all the kiddies immediately
jumped on it. IMHO it looks like yet another
pointless re-do of 'C', so use 'C', but that's
not how the newbies see it.
But the EXPENSE of translating/replacing all that
good old COBOL - that's a factor these days. The
USA/west had gobs of cash in the 60s ... but NOT
so much now.
Oh, I gave him a wiki of computer langs, 99% of
which were flash-in-the-pan. I did note that it
FAILED to include BRAINFUCK - what a hideous
oversight !!! :-)
Due to their audience, SOME langs are gonna hang on
for a LONG time still. FORTRAN is one of those.
Oh, the recent serious crap/attacks with M$ and
cloud apps probably do NOT encourage biz/govt to
be in such a hurry to replace their old in-house
COBOL. It WORKS. :-)
A month or so ago I posted a news story that says
the US IRS is STILL using 1960s hardware/software
for a lot of its daily operations. Dunno WHO
maintains the hardware - they must get HUGE money.
