Doesn't do that either. The actual daemon startup files are smaller than the scripts that got replaced and they're in a much more formal language. Just a bunch of data declarations. The emacs.service file: [Unit] Description=Emacs: the extensible, self-documenting text editor [Service] Type=forking ExecStart=/usr/bin/emacs --daemon ExecStop=/usr/bin/emacsclient --eval "(kill-emacs)" Restart=always [Install] WantedBy=default.target The service file does the same thing a shell script used to do, except we have well defined type of daemon invocation, in this case "forking", but we don't need a script testing for the keyword "start" and doing a fork. We have ways of terminating the daemon, without writing a script testing for "stop", we have a restart policy, and a text description that the shell scripts never had. Then the WantedBy keyword replaces the forest of soft links and sequence numbers in the old approach. All well done, from my point of view. > It seems to work well as far as I've seen. The rc.d scripts were an untenable mess, that's for sure, but that doesn't automatically prove systemd is good. Marko

Are you asserting that this would not work: ExecStart=/usr/bin/bizarre\ path/emacs --daemon I don't know or care if it does. If whitespace in paths was something worthwhile to support, someone would make sure systemd would support it. > (Note: the character after "=" must not be a quote.) Sometimes I suppose that would make sense. You could even start the old style scripts: ExecStart=/usr/bin/emacsd start ExecStop=/usr/bin/emacsd stop >> the keyword "start" and doing a fork. We have ways of terminating the >> daemon, without writing a script testing for "stop", we have a restart >> policy, and a text description that the shell scripts never had. No, you have to look at the whole thing. Systemd wanders into hot-plug and daemon recovery territory as opposed to start/stop and manual restart/recovery. A good thing. The bulk of the old code (in the scripts) was random. Each script bore little relationship to any other script. Now all that twisty little logic is boiled down into some nice little variable definitions. When I first became aware of the systemd outrage, I took a look. What I saw looks like a logical, well done replacement. I just don't see where the outrage is coming from. -- Dan Espen

It seems to work well as far as I've seen. systemd is a solid religious issue. That's as opposed to a gaseous religious issue, like vi vs. emacs; if vi users had to use emacs, or vice versa, they'd survive with little long-term grumbling (unless you take into account the muscle memory issue). There are serious reasons to embrace systemd; there are serious resons to avoid it. I'm sure you're aware of the arguments on both sides, so you're probably wondering what pushed me over the edge. You've seen Poettering on youtube. He wins by talking fast. He rushes in. That may not seem rational, but he doesn't pass the sniff test. I keep wondering when he's going to invade Poland. (Yes, I went there.) I don't like the other things that are gradually happening to Linux, either. Is it true that X will no longer run as root? A lot of my personal legacy stuff relies on that. I have no commercial horses in this race. I"m retired and want to putter around on my machines at home. I figure I have only 30 years left, and I don't want to spend time moving things around every time Linux changes in some major way. Linux is a neat way to get stuff done. But FreeBSD is a hobbyist's paradise. Although I use elvis myself, I like that FreeBSD offers a vi that's bug for bug compatible with a classic release of it. It is probably easy to mock this approach. But I like to work (metaphorically speaking) on an old Harley where everything could be adjusted with a wrench and a screwdriver, without all this modern frippery. My lawn. That really hasn't been true for Linux for more than a decade. Numerous configuration files were appropriated by the distro with comments advising the superuser to keep out. Systemd just finished the job. Marko

Many thanks to those who gave me new perspectives on systemd. This has become an occasion to think on other Linux things. I look on the approach of Wayland. One of the touted advantages of Wayland over X is that it doesn't have that clunky window tree (where everything, down to the last window frame and button, is/has a window). But I've written code, used regularly, that wants to see that window tree and traipse through it. If Wayland isn't using that window tree, are the fine producers of Wayland going to go to the trouble of putting that bug/feature into the X compatibility layer? If not, this makes my journey from Linux to FreeBSD not only a migration to the promised land, but also a forced flight from Egypt. -- Bill Evans / Box 1224 / Mariposa, CA 95338 / (209)742-4720 Mail-To: wje@acm.org -- PGP encrypted mail preferred. -- pgpkey.mariposabill.com for public key. I've watched that video by one of the Wayland developers and along with the "it's old", "it's too big" boiler plate, the only thing I got for a Wayland advantage is "no tearing". I wonder who is experiencing this "tearing" issue. I haven't seen anything on the screen that doesn't belong there since I started using SunOs4. (Except for color map flashing for Sun video card 8 bit color,) For me, the Wayland deal breaker is lack of remote single window support. I won't need that after I retire some time this spring. So, maybe I won't care, but I think it's a mistake to drop something so useful in a commercial environment. -- Dan Espen

Um, yeah, so what if you don't *use* a "desktop"? How does that work with twm? Or how, then, do you get the bare bones simplicity of twm at all? Don't want a "desktop", don't want all the gigs of stuff required to support one, don't care about drag & drop or all the other chrome (not Chrome :-). Where is Wayland going with plain and simple? > Wayland supports X so I guess all X applications will work remotely as they do usually. Wayland is not to replace X or obsolete it in any way. Wayland is for desktop users which want better desktop experience. Of course it is not yet ready, and I can't use it as there is no proper free driver support for my graphic card yet, but then again, why not try it when things get ready. All in all all X applications will work as usual. I guess that some time would need for people to ship Wayland bundled apps as well.
