This doesn't sound like noise generated from lights; the frequency is
different.

I had unplugged it to see if the house's electrical system was picking
up the noise. Nope. It happens when the radio is on batteries. I'll
take it with me the next time I get out. thanks for the suggestion.

Now I get to figure out how to triangulate a transmission.

It's really annoying. I can receive signals I don't want and can't
recieve signals (TV) I do want.

Some of the short wave did pick up strange noises before this mess
happened. I'm not sure I can remember which ones were where.

See if the volume changes when you rotate the radio. Remember the angle
and repeat at a different location.

I did try that in the house. It didn't seem to change volume but my
ears aren't what they used to be.

Likely a different problem entirely if it doesn’t sound the same.

No. It's RF Interference that shows up with AM. There's something in or
around your house that's causing a problem. (IMHO)

5hz is not something that you can hear, much less reproduce
using a normal speaker.

Now an electric fencer, on the other hand, will cause interference
at such a rate on amplitude modulated signals.

It is actually with interference.

You're assuming a sine wave or close. Perfectly
reproducible with a spike at a 5Hz rate.

But it is rather unlikely that that is what is producing it in her
situation.

I know what that sounds like. It's not a fencer.

Perhaps I should have used the term beeps. it could be a few more
but my counting is slow.

Well, I'm hoping this is a summer thing. :-( The point is that
RFs are showing up everywhere without FCC intervention. I can
remember when we (DEC) had to stop selling terminals because
you could read what was displayed on the screens using a B/W
TV. Now any random person can broadcast anything easily.

The bandwidth is getting too crowded. Is this a side effect of
changing from analog to digital?

Damn straight.
And the first politician that runs on the platform of
population control has got my vote, regardless of party.

I'm not an EE, but from what I read,
digital allows for compression, saving huge amounts of bandwidth
compared to analog.

Not one modern first world country is even
self replacing if you take out immigration.

And there is more involved than compression too.

The whole point of the cellphone system is that it
allows a hell of a lot more conversations to happen
at once than would be possible with analog phones.

Good point.
Clearly our leaders need to talk about _world_ population growth.

I know. Not going to happen, and I can just imagine the uproar.

The US prez is nowhere near as important as that and the
uproar would be about the other controversy, global
warming and the relativities with population growth
given that birth rates are dropping world wide now.
