It was a period of few full screen editors, so you needed line numbers to tell the editor which line to edit. In that context, line numbers seemed relatively fine. By 1975, certainly any book about BASIC would say "always leave a big gap between numbers". It was only really once you got away from line editors that the use of line numbers seemed less important. Microware OS-9 for the Motorola 6809 didn't need line numbers, but I can't remember how that worked. Michael

Dartmouth BASIC was created in the timeframe of the PDP-6, using a GE-235
(maximum memory = 16K of 20-bit words, general integer instructions take 18us
each). Later, moved to GE-635, which was 10x faster (1.8us), 36 bit/word.
And it was a compiled language.

The system was more like a transaction processing system (SAGE, SABRE, PARS) than a conventional time sharing system. When users were typing their programs with each program line starting with a numeric line number, their input went to a front end Datanet 30 in the 235 system, and a single monitor task on the 635. When you said RUN or some other command, only then did it sort the input lines into order and pass them to the compiler. The compilers on the 635 compiled into core, read in the runtime system to a fixed place in the program memory, and ran the program. The compilers were so fast that there was no point in saving the object code, until finally the PL/I compiler was sufficiently piggy to be worth writing a linker. R's, John PS: I know this because my sister is married to the guy who wrote the PL/I linker.

My recollection is that the Dartmouth people developed Basic on a GE-235 with some fancy GE I/O devices in the early 1960's, when the only DEC computer product was the PDP-1. DEC's next machine was the PDP-4, followed by the PDP-5, around 1964 as I recall. As I recall, Ben Gurley's last design for DEC was the PDP-3 progenitor idea that was developed through the 60's into the PDP-6 and then the 10, and the 10 didn't hit the market until something like 1968. Kemeny&Co. were up and running at Dartmouth long before that. Hank

Already commented on the GE-235. Want to clear up the DEC history.
PDP-4 came out in 1962, and the PDP-5 in 1963.

The PDP-6 came out in 1964, about the time that Dartmouth BASIC was created,
but it was unrelated to the PDP-3, a paper design that was essentially a
stretched PDP-1 (36 bits instead of 18, but otherwise similar). The PDP-10
(KA-10 processor) reimplemented and augmented the PDP-6 architecture using the
FlipChip(TM) technology invented for the PDP-7 (also 1964).

To this day, the KA-10 CPU remains for me the most elegant
example of a *large* yet practical variable-clock-speed
one-hot[1] state machine, with "one-hot" redefined to mean
not which shift register flip-flop contains a "1" but rather
in which delay line the clock pulse is currently hiding! ;-}
[And during a memory access, the "clock pulse" hides inside
the memory module! Which is why it was so easy to mix several
different speeds of main memory on a KA10...]
In contrast, the PDP-8 CPU's sequencer is an almost pure
fixed-clock-speed one-hot shift-register state machine[2]
(with some optional branching, to be sure).
And then there was CHARTWARE, but that's another story... ;-}

[2] Well, IIRC, in some instantiations it was actually a
"two-hot", but that's a level of detail into which we
need not delve further. ;-}

It was fun to debug monitors and apps on it. I liked the console; it was like playing the piano. I debugged most of my USAGE project code on System 2 which had been moved to a lonely corner of the hardware engineering lab after the LCG KA system had been dismantled. /BAH

"Timesharing" was a big deal in the early 1960s. Computers were enormously expensive, and the idea was to build a big one and 'share' it among many users via terminals. Exactly how this would work, both in terms of the user interface and 'under the hood', still required a lot of research.
These issues entered into the development of S/360 architecture and is covered in the S/360 history. While the architecture allowed for multi-programming with good storage protection, IBM chose not to include DAT--dynamic address translations--for which it got criticzed. IBM then rushed timesharing development at a time when its resources were already badly strained.
While there were real-time computers in production service in the 1960s, running _specific_ applications, such as SAGE or SABRE, was different than serving disparate users and applications. Much more horsepower and sophistication was required.
One of the key discoveries of that era was that while it wasn't too hard to set up timesharing for a _small_ group of users, it was very difficult to scale it up. Some early timesharing developers ran into difficult roadblocks in trying to enlarge their systems (see the IBM S/360 history for details).
C&A magazine (on bitsavers) has numerous articles on timesharing published throughout the 1960s. But it seems (at least to me) that the articles focus on the technical side, such as polling, memory space, addressing, and such, and not much on the user interface. More significantly, there isn't much on what, and how, the end user would actually _accomplish_ via the timesharing systems envisioned back then. A 10-char/sec Teletype would be cumbersome to print out a payroll, invoices, or accounting ledger for any decent sized business.
However, they did forsee a lot of what ordinary consumers now do on the Internet, such as ordering stuff (from a pre-printed hard copy catalog), making travel reservations, and doing school work. The only difference was back then the 'utility computer' would be very large and centralized, as opposed to today's decentralized servers.
As mentioned, early on, Western Union Telegraph Co. saw itself as a carrier connecting terminals with computers and computers to computers. A few years later, as it obtained computers, it considered providing services itself, to the extent the regulators would allow. Back then, W/U was very tightly regulated, down to the hours and locations of its public offices, and terminals installed on customer sites.
General Electric offered a timesharing service. I think IBM might have too ("Call/360").

The GE was indeed a timesharing system. It just didn't use an
interrupt-on-each-character user interface model in the CPU. (That was handled
in the Datanet-30 (think 680i on a KA-10), which then transmitted lines of code
to the CPU.)
In fact, our favorite PDP-10 programmers got their first exposure to BASIC via
a Teletype which dialed into the General Electric Information System (GEIS), a
nationwide timesharing service built around GE-635 systems offering BASIC,
FORTRAN, and assorted applications. It was only because a coterie of the boys
at the Lakeside School (especially a certain well-known pair) ran out the
year's budget in the first month that the search for a cheaper alternative led
to Computer Center Corporation, where Slug Russell and Dick Gruen were systems
programmers.

Our school district initially used GE Timesharing. Then they switched to an IBM 1130, which was very slow, then an HP 2000, which was neat. A former employer used GE Timesharing for an analysis application. (Today, it probably could be done on a spreadsheet instead of BASIC). I'd love to know the revenue/expense picture of GE's Timesharing, as well as the smaller companies. For commercial business customers, I wonder how the cost/value ratio was, that is, the cost of running applications (and writing them, if need be) vs. the value obtained from computerization. As mentioned, a Teletype was certainly not an optimum I/O device. However, for business number crunching, such as present-value, mortgages, financial analysis, statistics, BASIC could be very helpful. On the other hand, for science and engineering users, an easily written BASIC program offered six digit accuracy and fast answers to lots of problems.

The GE-635 and descendant machines have a fairly flexible architecture that has supported a number of operating systems all of which support(ed) timesharing. Dartmouth TimeSharing System (DTSS), GCOS, MarkIII timesharing (aka GEIS), and CP-6. Multics evolved on a modification of the addressing model GE-645 (later DPS8-M). The time sharing on the first 3 (DTSS, GCOS and MarkIII) had a related look and feel since they evolved from Dartmouth's Basic. However, the underlying operating systems eventually evolved quite differently. MarkIII developed a very different interprocess communication model that managed to support behind the scenes transition of running applications between physical hardware systems. The GENIE system some of you might remember ran on top of MarkIII. GCOS is in some ways primarily a batch system (cards, spooled print output etc.) Time sharing was implemented with a privileged program that swapped users in and out of its own memory space. The hardware guys that did the Multics paging/segmentation/privilege design eventually concluded that the model was wrong and redesigned it, as a capability architecture. DTSS, GCOS and MarkIII made the transition to the new architecture, Multics didn't and withered on the vine. CP-6 was born after the new architure and its user look/feel was modelled on that of Xerox's CP-V for the Sigma-6 Sigma-9 systems. Today only GCOS still exists commercially. Timesharing is now implemented by up to 4 privileged processes, and they have a more elaborate method of handing out memory, but a single user program is still limited to a single segment of up to 1 megabyte. There is a partially implemented replacement that uses one process per user, and allows access to the full abilities of the hardware, but its use limited to a few special applications. Aside, Xerox's CP-V (Control Program 5) was so named because it was intended to give good support for five computer uses. I can think of 4: batch, timesharing, tranaction processing, and real-time. Does anyone recall what number 5 was?

It was a period of few full screen No, it was so if you dropped the source deck for the application, you could run it through a card-sorter to get it back in order :-) It was also to handle patching (master source + patches merged in by sequence number) which was the pre-SCCS way of doing things. The burroughs mainframes (like the IBM mainframes) used block-mode terminals, so all editing was full-screen (sort of) and CANDE had a seq command that would prepopulate the sequence number column with sequence numbers (the location of the column varied by source language, so the editor files were tagged with the source language when created).
