"Every code block in assembler must have an explanation of its purpose that will likely be three times the length of the code."..was the mantra. Even today writing code that no one but me will see I have extensive headers for every function or code block explaining what it is supposed to do and often line by line comments. And sometimes I write the comments first. // open port //set up event handler for asynch connection //listen on port, and vector incoming data to handler ...and so on -- You can get much farther with a kind word and a gun than you can with a kind word alone. Exactly . At the end of the day., someone looked at how code was
developing and said 'y'know, all this would be a piece of piss if we
invented a STACK'
No need to explicitly allocate and free memory.
I think it was ALGOL that first used a stack for all that - not sure.

Lots of features of Algol-60 were specified on a “nice to have, no idea how to implement this” basis. Then over the succeeding years, a bunch of clever people went away and figured out how to make it all work. And that was a major driver in the progress of computer science over that time. Some of those features turned out to be really useful (e.g. lexical scoping); others just turned out to be really weird (e.g. call by name). Overall, it was a learning experience for everybody.

All the assembler code I wrote used GETMAIN/FREEMAIN, then I had a head-slapping moment a few years ago when someone said “just allocate a big chunk of memory and allocate save areas from it to eliminate lots of SVCs.” Of course this only makes sense when your assembler code has lots of internal calls, not for small stand-alone subroutines. -- Pete

Or if you have a userland-level API like POSIX, that specifies standard malloc/free routines.

That's essentially what PL/I did. The save areas and local variables were allocated from a big chunk of memory, and when it ran out, the subroutine prolog called an internal PL/I routine to get a new chunk and chain them together. Read all about it here starting on page 158: https://bitsavers.org/pdf/ibm/360/pli/C28-6594-4_PL1_F_Programmers_Guide_Nov68.pdf And for the PL/I subset on the tiny 360/20, it starts on page 200: https://bitsavers.org/pdf/ibm/360/model20/C33-6007-1_360-20_PLI_Dec68.pdf I hear that Algol F did GETMAIN/FREEMAIN at every block or procedure entry and exit. Someone at Princeton hacked it to suballocate from larger chunks and vastly improved runtime performance. -- Regards, John Levine, johnl@taugh.com, Primary Perpetrator of "The Internet for Dummies", Please consider the environment before reading this e-mail. https://jl.ly

Soon after dynamic memory allocation was invented, it was discovered that keeping lookaside lists of free blocks in common sizes speeded up allocations immensely. This was all well-known by about the 1980s, if not before.

implemented in CP67 kernal ("subpools") code 1970 (released CP67
R3) ... following from presentation I gave at SEAS 7Oct1986 (European
SHARE on isle of jersey) loots of R3.0, R3.1, & R3.2 was after I had
graduated and joined scientific center and stuff I had done at the univ
as undergraduate in the 60s (one of my hobbies was enhanced production
systems for internal datacenters).
https://www.garlic.com/~lynn/hill0316g.pdf
repeated 16Mar2011 at Wash DC HILLGANG user group meeting.
In the morph from CP67->VM370, they dropped and/or simplified a lot of
stuff. 1974, I started migrating a bunch of stuff to VM370R2 base for my
internal CSC/VM ... including kernel reorganization for SMP
multiprocessor (but not the SMP support itself). Then for VM370R3-base
CSC/VM I do SMP support ... originally for the internal online
sales&marketing HONE systems (before it was released to customers in
VM370R4).

You just can’t have RECURSIVE subroutines, or at least not without a lot of work. A fairly common calling convention, used on the 1130, saves the “next” address after the CALL in the first word of the subroutine and jumps to the second. Arguments follow the CALL, so you can access them using the saved word, otherwise the return address, as an index. If you want recursion you have to stash the return address somewhere. -- Pete
