It's a bit both, and it's hard to separate in my head because I don't
think I've seen it applied as naturally anywhere *other* than in ST.

OOP got wrapped up in all kinds of trendy buzzwords back in the '80s/
'90s depending on who was selling it to whom and which problem it was
being proposed as a cure-all for - "code reuse" for the corporate suits
who saw programmers as monkeys grinding out fungible "code product" by
hammering on typewriters and wanted to maximize hammerage-per-monkey
(and minimize monkey headcount, natch,) "information hiding" for the
security freaks, etc.

But basically, when you strip away all the marketing BS, I think the
true appeal of OOP (as I see it) is that it's an extension of the
*concept* of data structures; that is, it's a way of organizing data
into discrete structures that (when designed well, anyway) map neatly
to entities in the model of the problem the program is meant to solve.
But in addition to raw data, OOP allows the programmer to package the
*operations* inherent to an entity right along with it - and to adapt
them to one particular flavor of entity or another, as needed, so that
rather than having to remember the distinction between:

void sliceApple(apple * f)

and:

void slicePear(pear * f)

one could simply write:

fruitPile[i++].slice();

and trust that the Right Thing will be done. In this way (in a perfect
world,) a cleaner and (hopefully) more flexible model of the problem
can be built.

Now, *contrary* to what the marketroids of the '90s would've had us
believe, it's *not* magic pixie dust that makes everything better, it
does *not* obviate the need for intelligence and understanding of the
problem on the part of the programmer, and it has its own pitfalls to
be wary of (in particular, the distinction between operations which can
be appropriately classified as *methods of an object* and those which
are part of larger algorithms within the problem is both critical for
good OOP design and also somewhat fuzzy and requiring of careful
consideration and good judgement.) But as I see it, that's what the
draw is - a different way of modelling problems that (ideally) makes
the process clearer and simpler than doing it some other way.

Yes. That's what I took out of it. You packaged a data structure
together with the ways to access it and operations that could be
performed on it.

You can do that in straight C using one file per object and the static
keyword.

All that C++ gives you is a syntactical way to describe what you are doing.

And frankly I find the syntax utterly confusing

Yup - as I said, C++ is just C with OOP features awkwardly bolted onto
it. Not a good example at *all.*

Well there ya go.
I have to sometimes use those features if I am incorporating a C++
library, but I dont really like it

C++ gave OO a bad name. I think Java was trying to make up for it, but it
introduced its own gratuitous complexities ...

Java's cleaner overall, but still has its weirdnesses (why on earth is
there an int primitive type and an Integer class!?) and the standard
library is positively Byzantine...

You got to be kidding.

> ... why on earth is there an int primitive type and an Integer class!?)

Because Java wants to maintain a clear separation between “primitive”
types (int, real, boolean etc) and “reference” types (those defined by
classes and enums). Obviously this is done for efficiency reasons, but it
does complicate the language somewhat. So they needed to add those
“reference” equivalents of the “primitive” types to allow easier
interoperability with other “reference” types, and define another layer of
conversions called “boxing” and “unboxing”, I think it is, to tie the
whole mess together.

Python shows that “everything is an object” is entirely workable in terms
of language consistency and predictable behaviour, at least. And you end
up with a language only a tiny fraction of the complexity of Java. Which
still finds room for features that Java left out, like operator
overloading, multiple inheritance and metaclasses.

> ... and the standard library is positively Byzantine...

That’s why I say, you got to be kidding about it being “cleaner overall”.

I meant more on a core language/syntax level, and let's be clear, it's
a pretty low bar. Certainly not a model student, just less of a mess
than the Problem Child.

Even then, you often have to write things like

    final java.util.Map<android.view.MenuItem, PopupAction> NewMenuItems =
        new java.util.HashMap<android.view.MenuItem, PopupAction>(MenuItems.size());

That particular example may be Android-specific, but I don’t think you
can blame the Android API calls for this particular instance of
long-windedness; it’s fundamental to the way Java works.

   Look, Java/JS kinda just SUCKS to write in. The
   'object' aspect has gotten totally out of control,
   to the point where you can barely tell what one
   of those ultra-long lines actually DOES. This
   isn't a good thing.

   More "simple" approaches like TeX and Pascal may
   be the 'better way' by and large.

   Of course now "AI" is getting into the app-writing
   process. Its logic and methods and syntax are now
   kinda out of of the realm of human understanding
   and will rapidly get WAY beyond.

   This is where tech again becomes "magic". Speak
   the charms and chants and spells ..... but HOW
   it works will always be a mystic mystery.

It's not a mystery at all; it's a probabilistic word-salad composed of
diced and julienned plagiarism, served up by a program that knows
nothing about anything. This is very, very well-documented and not even
slightly magical.

Potayto, potahto, either way the *point* is that what "AI" produces is
a blind probabilistic hash made from code written by human beings, with
zero understanding of the problem it's being applied to at any stage.

   The committee better create a consumer-survey group and
   see how that option flies :-)

This is a kind of framing; when using imports (you'd probably use that
in Python), and type inference, you get the following:

final Map<MenuItem, PopupAction> NewMenuItems =
        new HashMap<>( MenuItem.size());

That's better, isn't it? :)

Cheers,

In Python, I can just write

    new_menu_items = {}

Here’s more of the Java code in its original context:

    final java.util.Map<android.view.MenuItem, PopupAction> NewMenuItems =
        new java.util.HashMap<android.view.MenuItem, PopupAction>(MenuItems.size());
    final android.view.Menu TheMenu = ThePopup.getMenu();
    for (PopupAction ThisItem : MenuItems)
      {
        NewMenuItems.put
          (
            TheMenu.add(ThisItem.Name),
            ThisItem
          );
      } /*for*/

That could be condensed down to very little Python code indeed.

Sure - and in Perl one can write "%new_menu_items" ;) But then, I won't
have type safety, which I really like in larger projects.

I can agree with you that that's unpleasant :) However, using more modern Java,
I think I can get:

    final var newMenuItems = MenuItems.stream().collect(
        Collectors.toMap( item -> TheMenu.add( item.Name), item -> item)
    );

Yes, it's more verbose than what's possible in e.g. Python, but quite readable.
