Well, there's the problem.  I believe anecdotes can be about oneself and 
need not include humor.

Researcher:"How is the pain?"
Patient: "Terrible. You can't believe how bad the pain is.  It's the worst 
pain I ever had.  It's worse than childbirth."
Researcher writes down a note.

You can add more words if the response is too short or too boring.  If you 
wish, change the tense to make it more "story like".

The drug is approved solely on the responses of  people with no 
qualifications for anything.  There is no "pain meter" to collect data.
