Yes I had the same problem, but the last line of your post looks a bit
like the solution. See below.

Brilliant! thanks to both of you, it worked. I changed to Liberation
Serif Regular. It was set to Adwaita before, but Adwaita does have a
bold version, so I don't know why it didn't work.
