So you think TB is a better newsreader? That's cute.

Pan isn't that bad. I've used it a couple of times on a Linux OS. Why
have you replaced it? It's been said that it's the best alternative to
Agent on Linux. (I've learned it isn't since Agent can run under Wine.)

Nothing. You can even type /italic/, *bold* and _underlined_ if you
want. BTW why are you posting this in html? It doesn't add any value to
your posting and it isn't wanted here.

As far as I know, there is no restriction. But there is a convention not
to post in html in any newsgroup. Html messages are a nuisance. Violate
such a convention and you will soon find yourself killfiled by most
people in the newsgroup.

It didn't matter in the groups he moderated as long as support was given.

Also I don't have to see the */_ in the posts.

The m.s groups were also mailing lists, so of course they accepted
html - and top posting. Many posters were unaware of the newsgroups'
existance.

What's mozilla.* go to do with this? We're in alt.*. If you run a
private newsserver and create private newsgroups, then you can post all
the html you want in those groups.

We may be in an alt. newsgroup on a private server, but someone has to pay
the bill for the equipment, purchased or leased and run it. TANSTAAFL.

Maybe, just out of common courtesy to the bill payer we could abide by the
small set of rules required.

There's far, far to much Me Me Me around these days, what about a bit of
community Us Us Us. :-)

Back when I was young, it was called Common Courtesy but there doesn't
seem to be much of it about now... :-(

NIN requires a paid account. Each year, I (have to) pay them 10 euro. I
also use ES and Aioe as (free) backup servers.

The bill payer doesn't make all the rules. Some Usenet rules simply are.

Do you come to a complete stop at a stop sign and wait 3 seconds which
is the rule, or do you just roll through it like so many drivers?

What about making a right turn on red when there is a sign "No Right
Turn on Red"?

Cross the street when the sign says "Don't Walk".

I could probably think of a lot mores rules that simply are, and not
followed by some.

Like wearing a face mask.

I don't see them in my Thunderbird ... because I have this in my
userContent.css file:

/* Remove the *,/,_ characters for bold, italic, and underline from
text messages/posts */

.moz-txt-star > .moz-txt-tag { display: none; }
.moz-txt-slash > .moz-txt-tag { display: none; }

What you say is indeed the common (and I believe, accurate) view of
traditional newsgroup rules. However, I have always mused about whether
this makes sense in groups dealing with products that deploy HTML, e.g.,
TB and FF groups. How much easier is it to present a problem in HTML if
it is involved with that problem?

HTML seems to always be discussed as if it were some sort of demon with
the devil close by. If that is so, why are those who feel that way using
products that support that evil? It's silliness in most cases
particularly since the same evil spotters are supposedly using those
products as users. Discussions in math and physics groups are castrated
trying to express simple equations in TeX or LaTeX or, worse, in plain
text. HTML is a technology that has made the internet more interesting.
If it allows some bad stuff to be smuggled in, then try to improve the
representation rather than ban its use.

I used Pan for several years when I stopped using SeaMonkey. It has a
decent scoring system and sub-thread handling. It was fine, but a year
or two ago on my xfce system it became buggy - the GUI part. Wouldn't
stay the same size - went off the edge of the display. I still use it
occasionally. I've also tried XPN, knode, and sylpheed among GUI
clients but generally use tin on Linux and SFOS.

But some newsreaders cannot read html. It's not a requirement of an NNTP
client. I'm only seeing and responding to the plain text. So it may be
easier to present the problem, but some readers will find it difficult
to understand.

Usernet is a plain text system. If you want or need to use html, use a
forum. I like usernet - but I'm happy to use forums too.
