#17111 — Mozilla Free VPN

How can I access Mozilla's free VPN on Firefox 150.0.3?

I have already registered for the free 50 GB per month, but I don't know
how to enable it.

There is no icon in the toolbar and no pop-up either.

In settings, under "More from Mozilla", there is an option to "Get VPN",
but this is for subscription only. Is there a way to get the free version?

I am in the United Kingdom, so it should be available here.

Never mind. I found the solution on Mozilla forums. I had to make
changes in about:config and look for "browser.ipprotection.enabled".

Hope this might be useful to somebody who has the same problem. <https://support.mozilla.org/bm/questions/1577738>

You need to login to make this work.

Do you really need VPN? Maybe it's just a toy that cannot be trusted. :)

Yes, because most sites in the UK are blocked unless you verify your
age. When I go to YouTube, for example, I get something like this:

Google thinks I'm a bot, but I think they want me to verify my age, as
is required these days.

Maybe it's just me that Google has decided to target, because I spend a
lot of time on YouTube, so they know the IP address using lots of bandwidth.

Now, I use a VPN to get a link to the video, briefly watch what the
video is about on a VPN connection, and then download the video to watch
on my PC.

50 GB is too low, but enough to get a download link. I don't use a VPN
to watch videos because of the limits.

China is less strict about censorship!

Really? I haven't noticed any.

Nope. Google gives a shit on age verification in UK. That screenshot just
says what it says: they "think" you're a bot. Nowadays that's among other
things a default excuse for every problem that occurs in transmission.
Just ignore that. You'll probably never find out what really happens.
But it's definitely not about age verification.

> Maybe it's just me that Google has decided to target, because I spend a

LOL. shit no. Google owns huge data centers and reliable big connections
to net-nodes worldwide. Your consumption on YouTube is just like pissing
in a river for them.
Unless of course if you constantly "own" exactly the same IP every time
and suck off Terabytes of Videos or so.

Have you tried to use another DNS-Provider? E.g. one that's not the one
from your internet provider or even based in UK at all?

> 50 GB is too low, but enough to get a download link. I don't use a VPN
> to watch videos because of the limits.

50GB is too low for permanently watching or downloading big video streams,
agreed. But basically VPNs were never invented for streaming videos at all.
They were invented for *important* web traffic with *important* data,
which should be hidden from public access. Crappy YouTube is the opposite
of "important".

> China is less strict about censorship!

Bullshit. Get a brain, get some knowledge about how the internet works.

No third party services which you can't personally check & confirm (which is
none, basically), should be trusted. Use them with care.

BTW....

Have you ever seen a "Certified Secured VPN" certificate from any
government? :)

As far as I can tell, the only way to turn it on *is* the toolbar icon
(I wish it had a menu option too) so if you have no icon, try
right-click/customise the toolbar and see if you can add it ...

It seems like it's not yet designed for mainstream use.

They did say it was a) only available in certain countries
and b) on a slow roll-out.
