My manual didn't say that. I tested:

hexdump -C tab.txt 
00000000  09 0a                                             |..|
00000002
cat -A tab.txt 
^I$

So, tab is ^I, as you would expect if carriage return is ^M

I am starting to suspect that all this is a wild goose chase.
