I'm on a Linux 64-bit system. I have a Toshiba external drive plugged in.

My desktop crashed. Just before crashing, I was watching a movie I had stored on the external drive, an old John Wayne flick. After the crash, I plugged the external into my Chromebook, and had no problem accessing the Toshiba drive.

With my desktop fixed and working, I replugged the drive into the desktop, and I'm getting the following message:

Failed to open directory: "TOSHIBA EXT".

Error when getting information for file '/media/jeff/TOSHIBA EXT/The Quiet Man 1952 BRRip 720p x264 - PiRATE': Input/output error.

I've tried plugging it into another USB port, rebooted, still no luck. It seems to be stuck trying to open this move and can't seem to get it to work.

Anyone have any insight into what I need to do to fix this?

Many thanks.

What Linux? What file manager?

Can it access anything else on the drive?

The file path looks odd. Is the device called TOSHIBA EXT? If so, I
would expect it to be mounted at /media/TOSHIBA EXT, not
/media/jeff/TOSHIBA EXT.

Any problems with any other USB drive?

Depends on the system setup. Both mount variants are supported and valid.

Linux Lite 2.6, 64-bit. Thunar 1.6.3 file manager.

Nope. Won't open the drive at all.

Nope. I'll try to redirect the mtab program to /media/TOSHIBA EXT and see what happens. Thanks.

Could be anything. - Physical HDD defect, file system error (differing
MFT's,...), insufficient user access rights (may have been altered by
the crash), power problem, defective USB stack,...

Check these two pages for possible solutions:
  https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FilesystemTroubleshooting
  https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Mount/USB

Report back with more information if unsuccessful. Btw.: If you have
a Windows system at hands you may try to connect your drive over there.
Windows is probably less forgiving in case of inconsistencies compared
to Chrome OS (and therefore more likely to execute auto-repair) and
less command line driven compared to Linux file system repair tools.
After connection to the Windows box, run a full chkdsk.

	What does /etc/mtab say ?
Maybe it still has a (bad) mountpoint, could be mounted as
another user (root maybe)
(no idea if Linux still uses mtab, it's been so long since
Linux has crashed, even longer since I manually mounted anything).
	HTH

OMG, how unsexy. I've always practiced safe-hex, because the
more, the merrier. So Linux is stuck in the days parties only had 8
pple ?
You are, of course, right, but I put that down to my poor
Heducation.
I just put a space in the name of a pendrive, and sure enough,
no 0x20h, it's b^%$^&dy \040.

Will certainly wrap:
/dev/sdb1 /media/KASP\040DISK vfat
rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,uid=1000,gid=1000,fmask=0022,dmask=0077,codepage=cp437,iocharset=utf8,shortname=mixed,showexec,utf8,flush,errors=remount-ro
0 0

So maybe when he managed to get his Linux to crash, it left
the line there, so he can't mount what has not been officially
un-mounted.

	Jeff, try this:

Remove the "bad drive", if that line continues in mtab after
you have removed it, delete it as root (just that one line). Then plug
the drive back in and it should be recognized.

Pooh : Octal !!! Shame on you !!!

Sigh. I live a cursed life. I removed the line pointing to the Toshiba
drive, unplugged the Toshiba drive, saved the mtab file, reattached the Toshiba
drive, and immediately got the same error message as before.

Something is stuck somewhere, and damn it, I just can't figure it out!

For the record, I placed the MX Linux DVD into the DVD drive, rebooted to
that system, and tried accessing the Toshiba drive. No luck, same error
message.

Then the problem is with the external drive, not the computer OS.

Late-breaking news. Had a brainstorm (for me, a drizzle...). I hooked up the
Toshiba drive to my Chromebook. I had no trouble opening the drive on the
Chromebook. I searched out the file that seemed to be giving me so many
problems -- The Quiet Man, with John Wayne. I thought, why not just delete
the file from the drive and see what happens? It won't delete. I go through
all the keystrokes, and the delete request is ignored.

I tried renaming it, but Chromebook tells me File not found. Incredible.
I highlight the file, use the command to Rename, and I get a File not Found.

Anyway, continuing to stew...

That's a general user-space mount via gvsd. Mounting occurs as fuseblk,
a general block device, that supports several file systems in background.
NTFS is likely; but you'd need to confirm this for further investigation.
The user space mount explains the /media/jeff mount point, btw.; although
even then this is not the only possible mount point setup...

Most likely explanation at this point is, that your disk is formatted as
NTFS and it carries two different master file tables (corruption due to
the crash). If you cannot plug it in a Windows system for auto-repair
(this isn't guaranteed to be successful, btw.), you should run TestDisk
against the drive:

  www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk

Testdisk is likely to be already installed on your Linux system. Please
be sure to carefully read the documentation and - if in doubt - always
accept suggestions for automatic solutions. Safe information wherever it
is suggested by the tool.

The "rw" in /etc/mtab means the drive was mounted read and
write by your Linux system. Maybe Chromebook mounts it read only ?
If so, it would be impossible to delete or rename the fire.
Check the mtab entry when you mount it with the Glugle thing.

Maybe the NSA guys are enjoying the film and don't want you to
delete it. You did say Chromebook, right ?

Jeffrey had also posted previously:

/dev/sdb1 /media/jeff/TOSHIBA\040EXT fuseblk rw,nosuid,nodev,allow_other,default_permissions,blksize=4096 0 0

I'm a bit confused here about the fuseblk mount.

If the drive is a vfat/ext4/ntfs etc I would be inclined to mount directly. Example:

mkdir /tmp/TESTFS

umount -l /media/jeff/TOSHIBA\040EXT # (lazy umount to disconnect dodgy mount)

then,

mount -t vfat /dev/sdb1 /tmp/TESTFS -o ro

Replace vfat with whatever fs is on the drive if it is not vfat/fat32/fat16.

It might also be useful to check the output of dmesg as errors with devices
are frequently reported there.

All my hard drives mount with that fuseblk thingy. I'm
completely lost with the innards of modern Linux. In the olden days,
things were simpler.

	Yes, simple like that.
>
>It might also be useful to check the output of dmesg as errors with devices

I remembered from my LFS days that when the power went down I
would have to remove lines from my /etc/mtab, or else I could not
mount my floppy disks anymore.
I would have imagined that modern Linux dists would have an
utility to do that after a crash. Anyway, Jeff apparently removed the
line from mtab, then the drive. It was supposed to be the other way
round.
	Remove drive
	Remove line in mtab
(maybe reboot to allow any scripts to do their thing)
	Plug drive back in.

If that does not work, maybe (sorry to be rude) unmounting and
then fscking the drive over might work.

Wouldn't work, if the drive is formatted in NTFS, which I currently
believe the most likely situation. Apart from this disclaimer, those
general check/repair approaches are all listed on the first link I
