I don't use smartphones, but I communicate with my texting/SMS friends 
with any/all of my desktops or laptops by using Google Voice integrated 
with Gmail.

That works well for me because the googlevoice number emails the 
text/SMS to my gmail account which I access from any of those machines, 
not to a smartphone.  I text out from googlevoice, not gmail. 
Googlevoice keeps a record of the sms/text in and out.

I also use landline/s for voice; so it is necessary for friends to have 
multiple phone numbers for me; my landline to call me for voice, my 
googlevoice number to text/SMS me, and under circumstance of my 
traveling out of town, there is a cellphone number that I turn on only 
under that type of traveling circumstance.
