Well, it has no value for spiritual reasons, and the parents usually bath 
their children anyhow. A baby cannot make a decision for itself, it lacks the 
capabilty.

It has has alway been that way, since the time of Jesus. Only certain 
religious groups came up with that idea, and it is not scriptural, like 
purgatory, and its predecessor buying indulgences. The Rich were conned with 
indulgences, which left the poor with no way out if they did not follow God, 
so they came up with purgatory as their way to heaven. Only the rich could 
buy a get out of hell free card.
