No, CME's were NOT discovered by spacecraft in the early 70s, this was the first direct observation of a CME as it happend. The first CME noted was the massive storm of 1 September 1859 but it required the discovery of X-rays and the recognition of the ionosphere before it could be understood what happened. -- Jim Pennino
