He volunteered and served as an artillery officer in the Belgian army. He was decorated for bravery, receiving the Military Cross, but the dreadful carnage he had seen on the battlefields troubled him deeply and changed his life. After the war ended he returned to his university studies but his interests now moved away from engineering and towards mathematics. He graduated with the degree of Docteur en Sciences in mathematics in 1920 after submitting his thesis l'Approximation des fonctions de plusieurs variables réelles Ⓣ written under guidance from de la Vallée Poussin." > The question is: TIME !!! > > Since before WWI he studied engineering in Louvin (=Leuven) and after > the war the university was still closed until January 1919. > > So his entire studies in mathematics and physics could only have > happened in the 10 1/2 remaining month of 1919 - if we reserve a few > month in 1920, that he certainly needed to write his PhD thesis. > Since the university of Leuven reopened after WWI in January 1919, he could not have started with physics and mathematics earlier than that date. One reason: he was a soldier in WWI and second reason: the university was burnt down and subsequently closed So he had only studied less than a year from start to finish and mastered both: mathematics and physics. To make his career even more astonishing: he left with a doctorate of science (~> PhD) in 1920. These stations of his life require lightning fast learning. But actually I have never heard about anything similar anywhere else. TH
