The Church of the Later Day Saints, aka the Mormons, believe that if you go to heaven then your family will surround you there. If you ancestors were members of the church, they will be there too. In order to bring your family back together in heaven when you join the church they will retroactivley baptise your family members and ancestors. In order to accomplish this they have compiled the largest database of ancestors in the world. When my mother died, I needed some information about her parents, and a friend went to their website and found the date of birth, date of death, location of birth and so on for her and her parents, although none of them nor I are members of the LDS (or even Christian) and they were not born in the US.
