It's been fine for me (writing device drivers, and frequently crashing the machine), but I don't use time machine. I've only used it once to restore a friend's system, and luckily, it worked. I use a journaling editor, and make copies of work whenever I get worried about losing it - usually right after something runs as intended. That and daily backups have been fine for me.
