Mac took nearly a minute from time I hit the keypad > (external drives came on immediately) to the login screen. I think my next diagnostic step would be to run another test, where I let the machine sleep for a good amount of time to make sure all activity has stopped for a length of time, then make note of the precise time I try to wake the machine, let it wake up, then look at the system log (both the system.log file and the command-line "log show" facility). Note that you must execute "log show" with sudo, and you can limit the time range of log messages with the log show --start and --end command-line switches to the time span of interest (from a few minutes before you woke the machine to a minute or two later), like this: sudo log show --start "2018-08-12 11:05:00" --end "2018-08-12 11:10:00" -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter.
