My mom's iMac (early 2009) came with 2 GB of RAM and slowed to a sluggish crawl after upgrading to Yosemite due to pageouts to a slow hard drive using just the basic applications like Safari, Mail, and iLife apps. Swapping out one of the 1 GB chips for a 4 GB chip for a total of 5 GB of RAM let it breath again, and it's now zippy as it should be. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter.
