I can reply to any newsgroup via e-mail, whether NewsTap > on my iPad or MTNW on my computer. It goes out from Mail in either case. Used to be that you could add a Cc: line, for example, to a usenet post and it would go both to the newsgroup *and* out via e-mail. E-mail and usenet posts have a *lot* in common, from handling threading, MIME-encoding, general use of headers, etc. Anyway, while there's little that's horrible about spawning off a call to an outside mail program if you reply to a post by mail-only, replying both to the group and mail (some folks used to cc: themselves to keep copies of everything they posted), gets unwieldy. The days of advantages to integrated programs are dwindling, though, and as I said, there hasn't been a very good usenet/mail program in a long time (and never, as far as I can tell, one with a GUI). That all said, Newstap, while our only option on iOS devices, is really barely workable. I tried, paid, tired, and now just let it rot on my machine. On the desktop, I'm using Unison right now, and it's mostly pretty good, but it has some serious shortcomings as well. In many ways, I miss the way I'd been doing things until very recently, via a newsreader inside of emacs.
