Cygnal is an ABI-compatible fork of the principal Cygwin DLL, which changes certain behaviors so that applications interface with windows in a more "native" way. You can compile your program under Cygwin and run it in that environment; then take the same executable and bundle it with the Cygnal version of cygwin1.dll. That executable will then exhibit different behaviors. For instance, it will use native path handling. Cygnal provides a much more attractive alternative to the "MinGW" method of making Windows programs with GNU tools, because Cygwin is a much more robust, richly featured library than Microsoft's MSVCRT.DLL, with a vastly more complete and better developed POSIX API. The Cygnal project is now in beta, release 2.5.1.99. From here it will increment to its 2.5.2 release, reflecting that it's a currently a fork based on Cygwin 2.5.2. The project has a very clear, precise list of issues that have been solved or are to be solved, each one associated with a target release, and also git commits, if it has been worked on.
