I had one occurrence where I was sitting on a log admiring the view and I had a feeling something was watching me. I turned around and the cat was about 100' away. I was armed with trekking poles and a Kabar knife I was using to brush out the trail. I yelled and waved the poles but the cat wasn't impressed but he wasn't aggressive either. He finally went over to a little stand of trees and did a good impression of an annoyed house cat, crouched down with a twitching tail. I've met others but not as close. We ware aware of each other but no aggressive behavior by the cat. To anthropomorphize, the cat recognized another apex predator, tipped his hat, and went on his way. The problem is when people fit the profile of fleeing game, for example the 5 year old, joggers, or bicyclists. I did encounter a bobcat that I thought was measuring me up for a meal but not the big cats.
