US military doctrine is heavily weighted to bombing the shit out people. 
It doesn't work all that well. The military also learned that boots on the 
ground and mechanized warfare work in nice, flat places like Iraq. 
Afghanistan convinced them if you go play in the mountains you get your 
ass handed to you.
