It's a good question where the Algonquians, one tribe of which is the Mohicans, came from. There were many tribes but the thing is they didn't get 'that land'. They were hunter gatherers and were semi nomadic, moving around are the resources changed with the seasons. They did a little farming at the summer camp. The Iroquois were much more structured and settled. Then came the Europeans and the fur trade. The French had allied with the various Algonquin tribes early on since their hunting skills yielded furs. The Dutch in the Hudson Valley dealt with the Iroquois and supplied them with firearms. The French tried to level up the field. The British won New Netherland after a few Anglo-Dutch wars and inherited the Iroquois, In the later French and Indian War it was mostly Iroquois on the British side and Algonquin tribes on the French. During the Revolution the Iroquois split. The Oneidas had been influenced by a missionary. The Tuscarora had lived in the Carolinas but after losing the Tuscarora War with the British settlers moved to New York state next to the Oneidas. They had an ax to grind with the Brits and allied with the rebels. That was the end of the Six Nation Confederacy. The tribes that backed the wrong horse moved to Canada. That whole 'land' thing was a cultural problem. When the Indians said 'sure, you can hunt here too', they didn't mean you could move in, destroy the hunting grounds, and kick them out. I'm not trying to idealize the 'Noble Savage'. I'll leave that to Cooper, Longfellow, and the like but by and large North America was a hell of a lot more peaceful than Europe ever was and is. then
