Probably tl;dr The Presbyterians and Catholics found a common cause in
the 1798 Rebellion to free Ireland from British rule. The upper crust was
Anglican (Church of Ireland) and had little use for either. The Brits
managed to drive a wedge between the Presbyterians and Catholics that
still is a component.

The United Irishmen chose green as their color, hence 'The Wearing of the
Green'. 'The Rising of the Moon' uses the same melody -- unless you are
Peter, Paul and Mary.

A more conventional rendition:

After the defeat there was an attempt to reorganize in 1803 that was
poorly organized. The leader, Robert Emmet, was executed. A friend wrote a
song that gets used in many places.

In many cases they're recycled traditional melodies but the Irish do write
fine songs.
