The Google car came snooping around the dead end road where I live. The amusing part was it captured my neighbor out on the porch. His face was blurred and camera didn't catch his query of 'WTF are you doing?'. It could have been worse; he could have shot the camera when the car had to turn around and retrace its path. > Probably apocryphal story - someone going to an address in, I think it > was, Alice Springs. When I was going to the Teddy Roosevelt National Park I played along with the GPs although I was skeptical about heading north from Beach ND rather than proceeding east on I94. After about 15 miles it said to turn right, so at least I was headed in the right direction. I thought there might be an entrance on the north side of the park. The pavement ended and it turned into a well graded gravel road. No big deal. After about 5 more miles it suggested I take another right down a jeep trail along a gas pipeline. My Toyota Yaris is a wiling vehicle but it certainly isn't high clearance, so I retraced my steps and got on I94. >> A long, long time ago, in Australia, I was about to buy my first >> dedicated navigation device, but hesitated several times. I've been a geocacher since 2002 and have been through several generations of Garmin handheld receivers. Lately I've been using the phone unless I plan to be in an area with no cell service. The app shows the caches and provided a description without having to download the info into the handheld. After finding the cache I can then log it. The GPS in my car is a 2014 Garmin Nuvi that doesn't have any connections other than the GPS signals. I haven't traveled enough lately to both but I can update the maps using the Garmin Express app. The annoyance is the app is only available for Windows and Mac.
