iirc, part of the Republican romance was killing priests, nuns, landlords, 
and others that didn't fit into their idealism. I forget all the acronyms 
but the Republicans also eliminated some of the POUM leaders who failed 
the Stalinist purity test. 

It certainly left a bad taste in Orwell's mouth.
