There are quite a few dairy farms in this area too. Jared Diamond's 'Collapse' focuses in part on western Montana. You can grow much besides hay and even that ability is fragile according to him. Of course, he also theorizes the Norse left Greenland after the climate deteriorated because they wouldn't eat fish. The American Anthropological Society produced 'Questioning Collapse', a selection of essays pointing out the errors in Diamond's 'science'.
