The only example I've seen uses the Uno pins to reprogram the boot loader. You would have to build your own board to replicate the original starter kit. While the BASIC Stamp, PICAXE, and other devices existed the Arduino made life much easier. You could say it was something like installing MX or trying to get a functioning system with Linux From Scratch.
