The later OS/2 install disks had something called Extended Density, some kind of hybrid format by the sound of its description. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_Extended_Density_Format Because it was a fiddle with the floppy controller itself, you can't install OS/2 in a VirtualBox VM because OS/2 detects that there is no real floppy controller hardware attached.
