It isn't nuts at all.

Having no backup is nuts.
Having all backups co-located is nuts.

Having a fireproof/waterproof local backup is a perfectly sensible idea.
30min protection may well be sufficient for most house fires, and it's a lot more convenient than offsite storage.

It keeps other things safer (not safe), which cannot (or should not) be duplicated elsewhere.
